The Evening Star. FRIDAY JUNE 3, 1870.
We would remind our readers that the lecture on "Public Spirit," to-night, by his Honor tbe Superintendent, will be given at the new City Hall.
In the Police Court to-day there were but two drunkards—women—but they were two specimens of human wretchedness and degradation in the extreme.
Three stowaways taken from on board the Wonga Wonga were adjudged to pay a fine, or bear a month's imprisonment. The only-other charge, and which occupied the Court during most of the day, owing to the volubility and legal acumen of the defendant, was one of indecent exposure. As it was remanded till Monday, we shall refrain from any remarks on the case.
Theatjbe Eoyal.—We must again remind our readers that to-night the Star Dramatic Company open the above theatre. On reference to our advertising columns, an excellent programme will be found, and we have no doubt but that a crovrded house will greet the appearance of this talented company. We are glad to see that some of our local favourites are engaged—Miss Eaymond appearing to night, and Mr. John Howe to-morrow. A Cottbt was yesterday held at th office of Laughlin O'Brien, Esq., Revising Officer, for the purpose of revising the electoral roll for the district of City East. A. large number of the objections were allowed and a number of new claims were admitted.
It will be seen by advertisement that Mr. Dornwell, the butcher, announces that he has the finest pig in New Zealand on view. The animal is said to be only 18 months old, and to weigh 700 lbs. The Union Bank of Australia, Grahamstown, shipped per Williams yesterdaj evening, one box containing 1909 ozs. 1 dwt. 10 grs. gold on account of the Shotover Gold Mining Company. An emergency meeting of Lodge Waitemata will be held in the Lodge-room, Masonic Hotel, at half-past seven
o'clock
I*eince of Wales Theatbe.—Last night the performance was for the benefi of Mr. W. H. Newton ;.and if he and Mrs Newton desired to know the feelings entertained towards them in Auckland, they had a testimony in the house that met the eye on the riain* of the curtain. The theatre was crowded in every part; and dress-circle, boxes, stalls, and pit in repeated rounds of applause bore out the testimony in a form that i 3 equally gratifying to an actor's. Crowded columns preclude a lengthened critique. The play was the " Duke's Motto". Mr. Newton as Lagardere surpassed anything we have seen from him before, and made us wonder why such an actor has not been secured, even at his own price, to stay the declining fortunes of the " Prince of Wales." As the chivalrous foe, the avenger, and lover, Henry de Lagadere of last night had his audience with him throughout; while Mrs. Newton thew her usual winning tenderness into her impersonation of Blance de Nevers. As this is to be Mrs. Newton's last appearance at the Prince of Wales, it will be easiiy under stood what that theatre will now be. The Extravaganza, " Colleen Bawn Settled at Last," by Auckland Garrick Club, aided by professionals, with little hitches pardonable in amateurs, and provocative of more enjoyment than if all goes smoothly, was very well represented. Mr: and Mrs. Newton, were called before the curtain, and received quite an ovation. The p.s Royal Alfred leaves the wharf at 10 o'clock to-morrow,(Saturday)morn-ing, and will remain four hours at the Thames, returning at 6 30 evening.
