MELBOURNE.

In the import markets business continues to maintain a very quiet, inanimate aspect, and the transactions reported are altogether of a minor character. Breadstuff's are iv slow sate. Flour is moving off at prices ranging from £11 to £11 10s. Wheat is quoted at 4s lOd to 4s lid for Victorian grown. Nothing worth special mention has, however, come before us. New Zealand finds buyers at a trifle under our quotation. Maize is steady at 4s lOd to 4s lid, and almost the whole of recent arrivals, about 1500 bags, has found its way into the hands of the trade. Oats are firm at 3s 4d to 3s 4£d- We note a demand for export at our quotation, and sales have been effected. The cargo of Mauritius sugar, ex Lochawe, consisting of 6445 bags, was offered under the hammer this forenoon, but as the trade refused to operate unless at such a reduction as importers did not care to entertain, only 1177 bags were cleared off. We observe that the cargo of the Elizabeth, and the balance of the Queen of the Seas shipment, about 8000 bags in all, will be offered on Thursday. Hops still meet with a good deal of inquiry ; we hear of a line of about 10 pockets 1869 Kent, medium quality, having changed hands at a full price. The tobacco sale at the various bonds was not very successful; only 40 cases were got rid of at from lOd to lOjd for half-pounds, and lOd for fives ; afterwards 63 cases fine Navy fives, sixes, and half-pounds were quitted privately at close on Is all round. Teas do not attract much attention ; there has been little appearance of business in the market to-day. Some 3000 packages, chests, and half-chests, balances of the Hanover's and Ellen Morris's oargoes, will be submitted to public competition on Wednesday. In liquids we hear of sales of Hennessy's case brandy having been effected at 27s 6d.— A rgus, May 24.
