LATEST THAMES NEWS.

Monday, 5 p.m. The Moanatairi Company.—The fortnightly retorting will take place early to-morrow, and the return will be a great improvement upon last. About 500 ounces of hard amalgam is in hand already, and the most of this was taken from the plates and ripples last week, the previous one being a poor one. The mine throughout is in a far healthier state than I remember, scarcely a day passing without a parcel of rich stone being brought to grass. Morning Star.—This company retorted after the despatch of the parcel on Saturday, and the amalgam gave 120 ozs. of retorted gold, the silver to-day giving several more. This is not a complete fortnight's crushing, but only a week and three days, the yield being a splendid one ; and the stuff now going through is expected to reach this, if not outstrip it. Success.—The whole of the retorting for this company is now to ban.1, and it appears that 60 tons went through at the Pioneer battery, which resulted in a yield, of 35 ozs. 17 dwts. melted gold. At Souter's machine 74 tons were milled, and returned 44 ozs. 13 dwts. 6 grs., or a total of -80 ozs. 10 dwts. 6 grs. melted gold. Belfast have finished retorting at Goodall's, and out of 53 tons crushed the yield is 10 ozs. retorted gold. Tweedside. —In my menlion of this company's crushing on Saturday, I stated the quantity going through the mill to be thrp'. tons; this should be four tons. A fui ■-■- quantity of amalgam has been tak. n -IF, and there is now in hand 63 ozs., which augurs for a rich yield. Shotover have cleaned up at the Tramway battery, and there is about 1360 ozs. of amalgam in hand, which is now ou the fire. At Partington's, the quartz milled last week was not very rich, but to-day it is making a splendid show. A cleaning-up will tnke place to-morrow night. Twenty pounds of amalgam wore taken off last week. At the company's own machine, the silver will be put ou the fire to-morrow afternoon, and the amalgam on Wednesday, wlu-n, I think, I shall not ho far under the mark iv saying 700 ozs. of gold at least will be got. I anticipate at least 1600 ozs. of gold for the month from all sources.

Middle Stab.—This company resumed work a few weeks ago, and are now pushing in a level from their shaft at the depth of 70 feet. 'This tuunel is in 110 feet, and is expected to cut the well-known lodo of this company almost daily. From the upper workings a large lot of stone is to come —calculated at 100 tons —and it is from this portion of their mine that the rich find took place, as (published a few days ago. I examined a few of the specimens, and found them very rich indeed, and a goodly weight of them too. Several stones were brought to grass during my visit, and on being broken were found to havo the colou". This company have every possible means and appliances at hand fcr making a paying mine, being possessed of a fine battery of eight iiead, with horizontal engine and portable boiler ; and another find or two like the last, should soon see it in the ranks as a dividend paying company.

Flying Cloud has been retimbering, and are now sinking their old shaft, which is going down 40 feet below the present winze, when a drive will be started towards the lode to intersect it. This shaft will be of immense service to them, aud will do away with a great amount of unncce.sary labour. On man has constantly to be employed at the pump, and another hauling up stuff from the winze, but this shaft will be able to do the work more speedily, and with a greater amount ot comfort to the men. ihe stopes are being worked from the No. 2 level to the bottom of the winze ; and within the five days stoping lias been carried on at this part. 25 lbs. of very rich stone is to grass.

The Eureka.—We arc glad to notice tbe progress that is being made in the opening up of the Eureka mine. The shaft is now down the required depth for a back of 60 feet, and tenders are called for opening a chamber in it preparatory to the opening out on the reef. The small leader, which proved such a fortunate iind to the company a short time since, still continues to turn out a lot of rich specimens. Tho last crushing from this leader left the company wi.h funds on hand, and in another week a further lot will be ready for the mill. In the meantime the reef will be opened, and there is little doubt entertained now as to the future prosperity of the company. • A considerable advance has taken place in the market price of scrip lately, and there is, we understand, a brisk demand for them at current rates.
