LOSS OF THE BEAUTIFUL STAR,
By the s.s. John Perm we regret to learn that the steamer Beautiful Star has been lost at "Wanganui. The vessel was proceeding down the Wanganui river with a full cargo of wool, tallow, sheep, and pigs, for Dunedin, when she struck on a snag, and sunk in ten feet of water at high tide. A considerable part of the cargo was transhipped into the John Perm on Friday morning. Captain Christian intended landing the remainder on the following day, and would without delay commence operations with a view of floating her.
WELLINGTON, May 11
The public meeting about the port of call was held last night. .Resolutions were passed affirming the desirability of a line such as Mr. Collie proposes. -An influential committee was appointed to use all their efforts to obtain the establishment of such service. Messrs. Rhodes, Fitzherbert, and Pharazjn were appointed a deputation to urge the Melbourne Chamber of Commerce to use their influence with the Victorian Government to induce it to join the New Zealand Government in eatablishing the line.

Captain .Deuchrass says he is certain the steamer he saw was the Charles Edward, as he was becalmed from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. close

He distinctly saw Captain Holmes on the bridge.
