DESTRUCTIVE FIRE AT

WANGAN"UI, May 7. The steamer Charles Edwards is missing. She left "West-port for Ilokitika on Tuesday, and lias not since been heard of. Great fears are entertained of her safety. The s.s. John Perm last for the Buller on the sth, making an intermediate trip before retnrning to Auckland. Tho Wanganui Chronicle of the 7Ui instant says : —" We regret to learn that the flax mill recently erected by Major Turner was totall ydestroyed by lire last Wednesday, the damage being estimated at over £600. The building and contents were not insured. The contents consisted of six tons of dressed flax, and cix lons of tow ready for scutching. The origin-pf the five is thus explained: On Wednesday- afternoon a 'man in liquor fell asleep on a. bundle of tow with his pipe lighted. UpoiV waking he found that fire had broken out, ihjd immediately attempted to carry the.tow outride. This he was unable to do owing to the intd.use heat, and the fire spreading the kcrosine wmvps. burst and enveloped the -whole buildingihi flames. Owing to the combustible nature oV the articles in the premises nothing whateverXcould be saved. The fire did, not, however,- reach the water wheel.'
