ARRIVAL OF THE 'TAURANGA.'
IMPORTANT NEWS EEOM
OPOTIKI
EXPEDITION CLOSE ON THE TEA-CKS OE TE KOOTI.
SPEEDY CAPTUEE EXPECTED
By the s.s. Tauranga we have just received intelligence of great importance from the East Coast. One of Te Kooti's party had come in and given himself up to William King, the friendly native chief of the Ngatia tribe. He states that all remaining now with Te Kooti are 30 men and about 150 women and children, and his position appears desperate. An expedition was immediately organised at Opotiki, consisting of 150 Europeans and natives, under the command of Colonel St. John, and was to stait on Friday (to-day), for Maraiti, where Te Kooti and his party are. The native that came in has offered to act as guide, and undertakes to lead the expedition so as to surround
the rebels before Te Koeti js aware of its approach. The fullest confidence is felt at Opotiki that the expedition will be successful, and that a day or two will suffice to annihilate the last of the murderous gang.
