NELSON RACES.
NELSON, April 19. At the Nelson races there was only a small attendance, but fine weather prevailed. The events resulted as follows :—Maiden Plate, one mile and a quarter, Mr. Stafford s Mist, 1 ; Mr. Bedwood's Songstress, 2 ; lour ran ; time, 2 mm. 28 sec Turf Club Handicap, one mile and three quarters, Mr. Bedwood's Peeress, 1.; Mr. Stafford s Magenta, 2 ; Mr. Stafford's Laeenfeed, 3 ; four ran ; time, 3 mm. 20 sec. Waimea Plate, hack race, won by Mr. Page s Eambow. Ladies' Purse, heats, one mile and a quarter : Mr Bedwood's Misfortune was thoroughly beaten by Mr. Stafford's Sapid Ehone ; only two ran, and it was a poor race. Criterion Plate, three-quarters of a ; Peeress, 1; Laeenfeed, 2. Mr. Bedwood's Songstress, 3; four ran. The racing was generally poor. Wednesday, April 20. loan Plate, two miles, Peeress, 1; Magenta, 2 • time, 3min. 59sec. Handicap Steeplechase, called three miles, for which there were six entries, was won by Mr. Worthington's Toby; Quick second ; time 6min. Free Handicap, Misfortune, 1 ; Laeenfeed, 2. Consolation, Lacenfield, 1; Mr. Bedwood's XXX, 2. There was a great improvement on yesterday ; the attendance was good, and the racing very fair. ........... ■.'••' ~, ~ DUNEDIN, April 20. . "' The Escort brought down 3905 ozs. of gold.' On dit; Mr. Fox is to be entertained at a dejeuner, when he will give an address on politics. The Caversham nomination took place yesterday. Mclndoe's election is considered certain. Dredging the Shotover paying handsomely. One party on the river is making £1000 a month. The Wardens' quarterly reports represent the districts as in a very satisfactory state. A Chinese, at Lawrence, discovered an 11 oz. nugtjet. J. W. Grieve, civd engineer, well known in connection with dredging here, has committed suicide. * WELLINGTON, April 21. An extensive fire has occurred at Greymouth, destroying the premises of Kitely, bootmaker; McNaughton, dressmaker; and Levinsky, photographer; also the boundary hotel and the office of the Grey Eiver Argus. The premises of Winoche, cabinet maker, had to be pulled down to stop the spread of the flames. Major Kemp and the Wanganui natives left for home on Tuesday in the St. Kilda and Stombird, steamers ; together with a detachment of 25 Armed Constabulary for Patea. Mr. Hackworth has been appointed Collector of Customs at Wellington, vice Mr. Seed, who has resigned in consequence of a press of other duties. Mr. Stafford was to address the Timaru constituency to-day. The competitors for the Government prizes for rifle-shooting steamed to-day for Dunedin. April 22. The s.s. Omeo arrived at the Bluff to-day with English mail.
