POLICE COURT.— Tuesday.

(Before T. Beckham, Esq., R-M.) DEUNKENESS. , William Crow and Thomas Green being charged with the above offence, were fined lUs. and costs, or to be imprisoned 48 hours with hard labor. „ „„_ William McGregor for the same offence was fined ss. and costs or to be imprisoned 48 hours with hard labor. ~__.• Anne Barnett, charged for the third time with drunkness, was ordered to pay a fine ot 20s. and costs or to be imprisoned for 48 hours with 7 days additional. HIGHWAY HATES. Thomas Jhonston, was charged by William Bowen, with having.neglected to pay the rates due by him to the Matakana Highway Board to the amount of £1. 19s. 9d. Defendant explained that there was no road or any means of approaching his property but by water. Mr. McCormick appeared for defendent and pleaded not guilty. . William Bowen deposed : I am collector ot rates for the Matakana district. Called on Mr. Johnston for his rates and he refused to pay ; produced the Assestment roll, objected to by Mr. McCormick as not being in accordance with terms of the Act. Mr. McCormick urged that there was no proof that the rates bad been demanded, that this was the Assesment List, that it was posted in some conspicuous place, that it had been signed by the chairman, or contained the description specified in the Act. His worship expressed himself desirous ot giving these matters more lengenthened consideration than time would offord on annual licensing day, and accordingly deferred judgment. PALSE PRETENCES. The charge made against P. S. MacKenzie, by Andrew Booney, for obtaining signature to a promissory note by false representation, was further postponed till Friday. The Court then rose.
