TRIP TO KAWAU.
It is riot too much to say' that no such excursion mania has previously seized our citizens as was manifested this morning. At the time appointed for the starting of the p.s. Williams ; for the island of Kawau, the steamer was not only crammed, but a multitude of persons, picnic mad, thronged the wharf, and frantically tried to force their way on board in absolute denanceof the efforts of the officers. In consequence of the rush to Kawau, -the Eoyal Alfred immediately proceeded to . get up steam,' and half an hour after the Williams, she also left the wharf for the same destination, loaded to her utmost capacity. Some scenes at the wharf were ludicrous in. the extreme. "Women were hoisted on board in every attitude; as the steamer moved off, men sprang across the widening cha3m with the agility of squirrels, while threatening language and pugilistic encounters were the leading features of the scene. Wives had got aboard while their husbands were unable, and vice versa^; and the effects of these sundering of domestic ties wer-* thrilling. By-and by the Duke of Edinburgh—which had been intended fov a trip to Motu Ilii—also got up steam, and equally crowded moved from the wharf for Kawau. With such charming weather and smooth seas, we have no doubt the excursionists will have a pleasant trip, and the picturesque hills and glens of Kawau will present a gay and animated appearance.
