THE LATE SUICIDE AT THE GREAT BARRIER ISLAND.
THE RETURN" OF SERGEANT
McCAFFERTY TO AUCKLAND
Sergeant McCafferty, who was despatched last Friday week to the Great Barrier Island, by the order of Mr. Commissioner Naughton, to enquire into the circumstances attending the death of Samuel Bailey, who was reported to have cut his throat on the 17th March, returned to town this morning and made his official report to the Commissioner. On arriving at the island on Friday weak last he at once proceeded to call the most intelligent men together, and forming them into a jury, of whom William Sanderson was foreman, an inquest took place. The body was not exhumed, and after a full inquiry, the jury returned a verdict that deceased had cut his throat while in a state of unsound mind.
