POLICE COURT.— This Day.

(Before J. H. Home, Esq., and D. B. Thornton, Esq., J.P.s) DETJXKENXES3. John Mcßride, charged with the above offence, -was fined ss. and costs, or to be imprisoned for 24 hours with hard labour. Maurice Walsh, charged -with the same offence a second time, was fined 10s. and costs, or to be imprisoned for 43 hours. BREACH OF THE 3TETSICIPAI. POLICE ACT, 1866. James Lennox was charged with the above offence. Mr. Hesketh appeared for defendant, and pleaded guilty. Pined 10s. and costs. FAISE PRETEXCE3. P. S. Mackenzie, charged with false pretences, in oblaiaing a signature to a promissory note, appeared, and on the application of Mr. Hesketh, who appeared for defendant, the case was adjourned till Tuesday. ASSAFLT. Frances Falcon was charged with assaulting Eliza Price, but the prosecutrix desiring to not press the charge, the case was dismissed. LABCEN'Y. Maurice Walsh was charged with stealing a bottle of old torn from the Greyhound Hotel. John Gillands deposed: I am barman at the Greyhound.Hotel. Saw prisoner at the bar of the Greyhound between 7 and 8 last night. From information received, I followed the prisoner who had left the house ; overtook him at the Exchange ; he had the bottle produced concealed under his smock ; it is the property of Mr. Corcoran, of the Greyhound Hotel. It is valued at four shillings.

William Mills deposed : I am a labouring man. Was at the Greyhound Hotel last night. Saw the prisoner there. Saw him take a bottle off the sb elf, put it under his shirt and "walk out. Sentenced to fourteen days' imprisonment, ■with hard labor. BREACH OF HIGHWAYS ACT. Eobert Carral was charged with refusing to pay £1 17s 6d, rates due. Put in a letter from Superintendent's office showing that the house in question was required for public purposes. Mr. Whitaker appeared for complainant, and put in the aflsessntvnt ro 11. of the Parnell Highway Board. . ~ J. W. Diddams deposed : I am the collector for the Parnell Highway Trustees. Know defendant. The roll produced has been settled for the district. The name of defendant appears in this roll, with description and amount of rate due, being a penny halfpenny in the pound. I demanded the rate due and was refused. It is for the year 1869. By prisoner : Asked you for this rate yesterday morning, and several times before. Ordered to pay the amount with costs. Walter Stebbing charged with the same offence being called did not appear. Constable Cosgrove deposed to having served the summons on the sth April at the house pf the defendant. Was told he was in town at the time.

J. W. Diddams deposed that.the name of of defendant, appeared in the Assessment Roll of Parnell (produced). Demanded payment of the rates due, £5 12s 6d, about three weeks ago ; did not receive it j and it ii how due. Judgment for plaintiff. Judgment for plaintiff with costs. The Court adjourned till 2 o'clock. The Court resumed at tyro. labcent. James Wallace was charged by Luke Kenny with having on the 3rd day of April feloniously stolen from his house in Albert-street, a bag of gold, valued £165. Mr. Brookfield conducted the prosecution. Mr. Bennett defended. The prisoner pleaded not guilty. Luke Kenny deposed : I reside in Albertstreet. Privious to last Saturday prisoner had been lodging at my place for about a fortnight or three weeks. On Saturday last I had £165 in gold. It was kept generally in a gun case, under my bed. Prisoner saw me ■with this gold on Ist of April, and was aware that I kept money there. Left my money in a boot hanging over my head, before going to Kaipara. Returned on Monday evening laßt, and found my money -was gone. The boot was on the floor. The detective officer and my son pointed it out to me. I can identify some of the gold. Described the gold produced to the officer before I saw it with him. It is bent and indented. (Left Sitting.)
