Chicago, February 2d.—Forty-one criminals were sentenced at the term of the Court at Joliefc this morning. A large crowd of ruffians and thieves, friends of the prisoners, congregated about the jail and followed the omnibuses conveying the convicts to the depot, but a strong force of police pevented any demonstration.
A desperate fight occurred in Orange County Indiana, a few nights since, between two brothers-in-law, named Smith and Denbe. Both perhaps fatal wounds.
Augusta, Maine, February 2.—An order was introduced in the House to-day directing inquiry into the expediency of abolishing capital punishment.
.New I'okk, February 2.—A building occupied by the Metropolitan Paper Company was burned to-day. Loss, from 150,000d015. to 200,000d015. Two firemen were badly injured by the falling walls. The engine house of Fleming & Wells, in the oil wells at Green Point, exploded last night. Ifix-Judge LoncriefT died to.day. Prince Arthur visited the stores of A. T. Stewart to-day 5 dined with Collector G-rindeil, and attended the opera in the evening. Information has been filed by the District Attorney, looking to the confiscation of 200,000 gallons of whiskey, found at the rectifying house of H. Webster & Co. for alleged fraud on the revenue. Q-eorge Wilkes is about to sue the Turf, Field, and Farm for 20,000d01. damages. New York, February 2.—The steamer Santiago de Cuba, on February Ist, at 10 p.m., collided with the steamer Brunette, from New York lor Philadelphia. The Brunette sunk in six minutes. The crew were all saved except two firemen. Nashville, February 2.—Governor Senter transmitted a special message to-day relative to ihe recent murders by mobs, and asking official power to bring the offenders to justice. Eight buldings were burnt at Clarksville, Term., to-day. Loss, 16,000 dols. A special from Lebanon, Ey., says a mob of about 75 men took two men of Washington County out of Springfield Jail on Monday night and hung them. They were charged
with rape. United States soldiers were detailed at the request of the County Judge to guard the jail, but the other prisoners defended themselves; some one of the mob stuck a pistol into a cell and one of the prisoners knocked the pistol out of the assassin's hand and with that drove off the St. Louis, February 2.—The Weston Piano Factory of Menkel & Zimmerman, on Souta Sth-street, was damaged by fire early this morning. Loss about 8000 dols. Trenton, February 2.—The Assembly yesterday rejected the Fifteenth Amendment by 32 to 27. New Orleans, February 2.—News irom Mexico, via Brownsvill, Texas represents that the revolutionary party is daily strengthening. iN E"W York, February 2.—A despatch received at the Cuban headquarters reports 300 persons killed in Havana, January 31, by the Volunteers. A great fire took place in the negro quarter of Havana the same night. Toronto, February 2.—The Dominion Government has ordered the construction of & large number of boats, to be 36 feet long, six feet wide and three feet deep, for the purpose of sending men into Winnepeg settlement on the first opening of spring.
