The Union Company's s.s. Penguin, in command of Captain Anderson, arrived here on Tuesday morning from Dunedin. Speaking of lier the Press says :—" It is " some months since the Penguin has been in service. She was always accounted a corafortablo vessel by passengers, and second to no other sfeatner in the ' red funnel' fleet as a good boat in bad weather. All she lacked was the speed, and the quality of economy in fuel which the more recent improvements in steam power machinery have soeured. Ihese have now been supplied during her ' lay up' at Dunedin. Compound surface condensing engines of the latest pattern, and of 1000 indicated horse power, have been substituted for the old style engines she was first fitted with, and her rate is now that of a 12-knot boat. New boilers were also put in her, and such further new features introduced in her engine-room as entitle her to rank with the best vessels in the fleet. Some attractive alterations have been made also in the saloon approaches and accommodation. Indeed, the Company has apparently spared no expense in fitting her out for the passenger trade, first and second class, in a style equal to the rest of the fleet for elegance >vnd comfort. The Penguin left last night for the North." She landed 17 tons and loaded 12 tons of cargo, sailing for Lyttelton at 11 a.m. The Alice Jane loaded a part of Mr Knight's wooJ at Tekao Bay. She will return for the remainder of the clip. Tho s.s. Wanaka arrived this morning, and, after discharging 15 tons, and loading some cheese, wool, and fruit, sailed South.
