COCKSFOOT SEED.

To the Editor.

Siß, —In your issue of to-day you quote from a report of the Canterbury Farmers' Co: operative Association (Limited), dated sth January, in which, after mentioning the sale of a large line of seed at 4d per lb, the writer goes on to say that •' the fact tbat the North Island competed with producers here last season would point to the conclusion that no outlet in this direction can be looked for." I do not know where the so-called fact could be obtained, but I do know that your shipping records show the large quantity of cocksfoot that •was exported last year from Akaroa direct to the North Island, irrespective of the many shipments in the same direction from Lyttelton, and I have also the pleasure, through your courtesy, of informing my co-producers that by telegram received this day from a correspondent in the North Island, I am informed that cocksfoot is rising in value there, and am asked for -, quotations. You are always so ready to ■• state " fairly " the current prices of Peninsu'a produce, that I feel I need not apologise for asking space to correct an asser tion which, if left uncontradicted, would probably do much harm, especially as coming from an association supposed to uphold tho farmers'interests.—Yours, etc., PRODUCER. January 9th, 1883. [We are glad to ineert "Producer's' letter, and hope the price will keep up. The Farmers' Co-operative Association prices were quoted because they were supposed lo be (as you sny) the warmest iriends the farmer had.— Ed. Mail.]
