Christchuiicii, January 8. ■j rROBBEUY-AT LYTTELTON. A robbery wes committed yesterday on board the steamer Akaroa, lying at the Lyttelton wharf. The mate- and steward are losers to the extent of several pounds in cash and a quantity of wearing apparel. No clue to the thief is forthcoming. EXPENSIVE CUSTOMERS. At Kaiapoi, W. Burnip, publican, was fined £10 for supplying James Kinley with liquor, he being legally prohibited. J. Griffiths, a blacksmith, for giving beer to John Armstrong, was fined £5. DEATH OF A MAORI CHIEF. Arapatakoti, Maori chief of the pa neaKaiapoi, died at nine o'clock last evening-, at the advanced age of 98 The maoris are now making preparations for holding a grand tangi. THE AUCKLAND MURDER. The Auckland case of alleged murder against Priestley and Mrs Hamilton commenced in tho Police Court to-day. Messrs Earl and Cooper defended ; Mr Williamson, the crown prosecutor,, prosecuted. Strong comments were made by the prisoners' counsel re newspapers commenting on the case. Over forty witnesses are to be examined. The only evidence of importance that has yet transpired is that of Dr Goldborough, who held the post mortem. He depoaed . that the wound on Hamilton's head corresponded exactly »vith the axe Mrs Hamilton was seen carrying on the morning after Hamilton's death. He also deposed that the wound could not have been caused by his fall on the bedstead, as asserted by Mrs Hamilton. SUDDEN DEATH. James Rpdgers, slationmaster at Burpside, died suddenly last night. NAPIER HOSPITAL. The Napier Hospital Committee is in .trouble, the chairman agitating for. a reconstruction of the committee, leavmgthe oorough representative out in the cold. THE PAPAKAIO MURDER. The trial of the Papakaio murder case is fixed for the 22nd inst., at Dunedin. STILL IN PRISON. Massey is still unable to find hail. It is understood that the police have found some important documentary evidence at his house in Dunedin. DISTRESSING DROWNING ACCIDENT A drowning accident occurred at Manutabi on Saturday. A boy called King, who was bathing in the dam, got out of his depth. His father went to save him, and was drowned also. The bodies were recovered. THE GUEST OF THE FOURTH . ESTATE. The Fourth Estate entertain Mr Archibald Forbes", at a banquet at the Royal Hotel, Christchurch, on Saturday.
