SPORTING.

The Lower Heathcote races came off on Boxing Day, and were most successful. The Handicap Hurdle race'of £50 was won by Mr Piper's Johnny, and the Maiden Hurdles by Mr Hale's Parihaka. The Maiden plate was a surprise. Spear grass was the favorite, but Mr M. Hawkin's eh in Awatere managed to pull it off. In one of the totalisators there were 156 subscribers, only three being on the winner, and in the other there were 115 subscriber, and not one on the right horse. Mr McEvedey's Trumpeter was the cup winner, beating The Curate, Blue jacket, and Supplejack, and the same colt took the Flying Stakes. The Novel Race was won by Supplejack, and the Consolation by Rebecca. The most interesting event to in, however, was the Handicap Trotting race, which was won hands down by a Peninsula horse. Mr John Sanckoll has shown so much phuk an! energy that all will be glad to hear that he has scoied a payable win with his horse Lunatic.

The following is the account of the race taken from the Press :—Handicap Time Trot of 60 soys; 10 soys to second horse ; 5 soys to third - horse out of the stakes ; weiglit not less than IOdt ; about three miles. Mr J. Surckell's bl h Lunatic, agred, 40 sees. 1 ; Mr G. McCI tire's br g Wanaka, 40 sees. 2 ; Mr McAlpine's b g Jenny, 30 sec. 3 ; Mischief (scratch) and ten others also ran. Lunatic at once getting into his stride was soon at the head of affairs, and won easily. Totalisator, 167t-36 on the winner. Much dissatisfaction was expressed by many at the inside totalisator not closing as soon as the start was effected. Those in a position quickly realised there was nothing in the race excepting Lunatic, and a most unseemly rush was therenpon made to the totalisator in the hope of getting on. When the horses started there were only seventeen tickets taken out on Lunatic, but these, before the closing of the machine, were ewollen to thirty-six.
