Commercial. AUCTIONEERS' REPORTS.
Messrs H. Matson & Co. report on the Live Stock Market, &_., for tho week endng Thursday, December 21sl, 1882, as follow;.:—Yesterday being the Christmas market day at Addington, there was a large supply of all classes of stock, though trade taken on the whole w.'-s devoid of spirit. With sheep the yards were crowded, but with tho exception of a few choice lines the general quality of tho mutton to hand was below the average. On this point, however, the trade arc not likely to complain at present, and for some time past the weather has been too warm for the manipulation of heavy weights in any class of meat. With regard to Wedncs day's entry there was certainly nothingcalling for special mention, light weight fat sheep and stores making up about twothirds of the day's numbers. At the opening of the auction there was a comparative small attendance, nnd prices ruled Gd to Is below the previous week's quotation; the same remarks applying lo all the sales in fat sheep during tho day, with the .exception of a few of the best lots, in which no decline was noticeable. Mr Charles WithoH's crossbreda brought 9s 9d to 10s 3d, Mr Bong's ewes 10s 3d, Mr McLennoh's wethers lis 9d, Mr Stackhouse's wethers 12s 61, Mr Overton's ewes 10s 6d, Mensrs Edmond and Gobbles crossbrecls 10s. Mr O'Callaghan's lino 10s 6d, Mr Hnrtnoll's wethers Us to 12s. Messrs Morten and White's crosshrods 10s 6d, etc. We quote mutton out of the wool at an average of ljd per lb, extra prime or inferior quality varying a little either above or below this price. In store sheep trade was also a little easier, especially in nged lots, but with young lines there is scarcely any perceptible change. Amongst others, wo placed a line of shorn crossbred hoggets at 9s 3d, aged crossbred couples shorn at 9s 6d, etc. As was generally expected, in view of the approaching Christmas week, the largo supply of fat lambs wore tho most saleable class of stock in the market. Prices showed an advance on late sales, and every lot was cleared at from 6s to 9s per head. With regard to the fat cattle sale, there is nothing satisfactory to report, the medium supply being even too much for tho day's requirements. The quality with a few exceptions, was about the average, and 20s to 22s 6d per 1001 bs may be taken as tho m.rket rate, with a good few lots unsold. In store cattle the trade seems to have again c°mc to a standstill, as out of a large entry of nice young stock penned yesterday very * QW lots were sold, and these at low pricesIn pigs there is little or nothing doing at present, the low values ruling of late having shut off supplies. Privately during the week we have sold a line of polled Angus cattle, on account of Mr J. T.. Mateon, to Messrs Hopkins and Co., as Christmas beef, at £12 per head. The totals yaided for the day comprised 9008 .sheep, 630 head of cattle, and 35 pigs.
