A Match and a Challenge.—The ques lion of which is the better of those two fine boats, the Pinafore and the Dream, appears to be still a vexed question. Not at all satisfied with/the results of SUur day'a race, Mr Tosswill and.Mr Henning arranged a friendly "match for throe guineas a side to come' off yesterday. Accordingly at 1 p.m. the boats w«re started by Mr Hargreaves, and went away with a good breeze. Unfortunately, how-, ever,.an iron pin that holds the Pinafore's centre-board broke when near the Wainui buoy, and she retired from the rade in consequence. Mr Henning, however, is by no means satisfied with this ending, and in our advertising colums will be found ja challenge to the owner of the Dream to sail her round a certain course. May the challenge be accepted, and may there be a fresh breeze and a good race.

Little River School.—A meeting of the Little River District School Committee was held in the schoolroom on Monday evening last, tho lltli inst. Present— Messrs W. Coop (chairman), J. Akaroa School.—The close of this school on Friday afternoon for tho Christmas holidays was marked by the distribution of a number of prizes, awarded by the committee in accordance with the results of the inspector's examination last September. It was explained to the children that in order to gain a prize this year it was not sufficient to have passed a standard even with credit, which so many had done, but prize-takers must have distinguished themselves by special diligence, In the absence of the chairman (Mr Westenra), who, unfortunately is not yet able to walk about much, His Worship the Mayor kindly consented to distribute the prizes, taking the opportunity of giving the children a few words cf encouragement and advice. The following were the prize takers:— Standard Vl.—Gilbert Dalglish, (last year) William Sims, Frederick Sims. Standard IV.—Arthur Sims. Standard lll.—lsabella Armstrong, Frank Penlington, Louis Vangioni. Standard 11. —Mary Ann Cullen, ' Mary Masefield, Arthur Whitaker, Charles Alger. Standard L—Mabel Wafjstaff, John Cullen, George Ward. Cheers having heen given for the Mayor, for the teachers, and for tho committee, Mr McGregor exptessed the satisfaction which tho committee felt in the way in which the children had acquitted themaejvea, and the great interest which the committee takes in the welfare of the school. He thought that there should be special prizes for needlework, but the subcommittee appointed to arrange about the prizes had been instructed by the general committee to award the prizes in accordance with the inspector's report. The prize for French is to stand over till Easter.

Pigeon Bay.—A correspondent writes:— An interesting ceremony of house warmii g took place here, at the instance of Mr J' Robinson, when experiments were tried on " living stoves." The gentlemnn's intention did not at all appear to be to find out which stove would consume fuel, for the abundant supply flatly contradicts Ibis. The occasion brought together the elite of the district, and also from a distance, and there, to bo sure, " beauty shone in nil hercharmH." After the appetite had been well regaled and the tables removed the-.intellectual, and, t may be said the secorid division of the physicaF part of the programme commenced. The floor was taken at intervals by a dozen to twenty couples, who showed by their evolutions what control can be obtained over the muscles by training, while to time their motions two young violinists discoursed eweet music They say tbat "music has charms to soothe "—what's the rest ? but never mind. However, t!io taste for vocal melody, the best of all melody, was provided for too, undor. the direction of a musical gentleman sojourning here, and for the instrumental accompaniment there pri-sidcd at the organ a young lady well known here. It having boe-i wintered that Iwo accomplished vocali.-ita wer n to favor the company with the '• Loan uf a Lover," exportation was on tiptoe, but doomed to disappointment. The initiated understand the ivsun for ■ non-appearance id that one Ims left the "Loan Market." arid that the uther is mak-ing-arrangements to enter into partnership in a different line, but whether in the oil or mineral business is not yet certainly known. To sot forth in full all the pictures of the evening i.-> not attempted here. Undoubtedly, however, the thanks ol: hi.s gueste are due to Mr Robinson for no e.tijoya'ole a-party, where nm.°ical and moral iinrmwy alike prevaile I; and though we oannot wish " many returns o' the occa r ai on," yet in view of another possible event, which I hope may not be far distant, c .eh of Friday evening's givists may be allowed to «ay for himself, i: Wi-eu that, takes place, may I bo rhurc fo 390."
