Received December 4, 2.50 p.m. Cairo, Dec. 2. ARABI SENTENCED TO DEATH. The trial ot' Arabi was concluded to-day. He was found guilty of the charge laid against him, mid was condemned to death. The Kliedivo has, however, since commuted the sentence to exile. London, December 2. The current series of wool auctions will close on Thursday next, the Bth inst. A serious collision occurred to-day in the Channel between i:he barque Selitu, 723 tons, grain laden from Lyttelton, and the steamer Malstells, of Newcastle. The barque sank within a tihort time after the collision, and is a total loss. The steamer has put into Plymouth severely
damaged. So far as is known no loss of life has occurred. London, December 3. The most Rev. Dr Tait, Archbishop of Canterbury died last night, aged 71 years. Received December 4, 11 40 a.m. London, Dec. 2. Parliament was prorogued to-day by commission. The speech from the throne, read by the Lord Chancellor, stated that England's relations with foreign powers are of a cordial nature, and referred to the friendship existing between England and France. Tho speech added that Her Majesty recognised the increased obligation of England in Egypt, and Government is determined to maintain treaties in reference to that country, to uphold any firmans granted by Turkey, and promote tho prudent development of the institution of the Egyptian Government without disturbing the general quietude of Eastern Europe, and Her Majesty is confident that the approval of the Powers will result from England's counsels in Eastern questions. The speech wont on to say that it is feared that much distress will be fe't in Ireland during the present winter. Referring to recent murders in Dublin, the speech states that the Executive will firmly exerciso its powers for the suppression of disorder. In conclusion, it stated that the social condition of [reland generally may now he said to be considerably improved. Michael Davitt, one of the leaders of the new Irish National League, who has been delivering spoeches of an incendiary character, has been summoned to appear at the Police Court on Tuesday next, and find sureties for his good behaviour in future. St. Petersburg, December. 2. M. Giers, the Russian Minister for Foreign Affairs, has returned to this city from his visit to Berlin, where he had lengthy interviews with Prince Bismarck and the. Emperor William. Nothing has yet transpired as to the results of the meeting.
