THE SUMMIT ROAD.
To the Editor. Sir, — When reading the report of the last meeting of the Akaroa County Council, in your Friday's issue, I thought that at last the Council were waking up to do something that would remove the stigma of being a useless public body, unable to perform work of any great value ; but surely this opportunity to open the Summit road, which is likely to be a most important, though expensive road, will be a fair test of what interest they take in advancing the welfare of the County. I was surprised to find one member bring forward one reason after the other for the the purpose of throwing tho matter overboard, and one would think this opposition would come from a member who represents a district not interested in tho road ; but no ; the obstruction comes from our own member for Berard, a riding one would think largely interested ; and it is rather amusing that when he gives his three reasons for obstruction, that he should come round and support the amendment to spend £15, for if he thinks, as I take it he does by his reasons, that the undertaking is useless, I cannot understand for tbe life of me why he should uphold the expenditure of £15 of the Council's funds. Trusting the ratepayers will not allow such an important matter to drop.— Yours, etc., RATEPAYER.
