BANKS PENINSULA FARMERS CLUB.
A meeting of this club was held yesterday. Present—The Vico-President, Mr Checkley, (in the chair) and Messrs Libeau, David, Barwick, and Jacobson. The minutes were duly read and confirmed. Correspondence was read— From Mr Stephen Watkins as follows :— " Akaroa, October 23, 1882. "Gentlemen, —Your list of prizes and rules were brought before our last meeting, and approved of. The committee wish me to express the pleasure they feel at the interest the Farmers' Club have taken in this matter. I should have replied sooner, but I knew that what took place at our meeting would be seen through the Mail ; and the schedules not being ready for issue, I have not delayed any longer, but will as soon as printed forward you some per post.—Yours, etc., "Stephen Watkins." From the same as follows:— " Akaroa, Oct. 25, 1882.
"Dear Sir, —I send you some early sweet or sugar corn. Please give it to members of the club to grow for seed. Plant at once. 4 This variety is used for garden purposes; is early, very tender, and sugary ; ears good size, and comes into use quite early. An excellent table variety. . Culture—Drop in drills three feet apart; and leave four plants to the drill. Next season plant at intervals of ten days, from early spring to midsummer, which will insure a constant supply of green corn throughout the season. I send you some schedules ; you can have more by applying to me. I may say that Mr Farr kindly sent me the corn through Mr Garwood.' I have planted quarter tnyaeli, and I send you the rest. —Yours, etc., "Stephen Watkins."
The Secretary said he had distributed the corn amongst the members of the club. It was agreed that the secretary write to Mr Watkins, thanking him on behalf of the club for the present of corn. Mr Jacobson reported that he had as requested, seen the proprietors of the Oddfellows' Hall, Akaroa, regarding the use of the back room for the club meetings, and that they had agreed to let it for 3s 6d per meeting. Mr David proposed, and Mr Libeau seconded, that the offer be acceptedcarried.
The Secretary was instructed to write, accepting the offer. It was resolved that Messrs Bowron, Harding (manager Ashburton Cheese factory), and Ivey (principal of Lincoln Agricultural College) should be asked to act as judges of the Agricultural and Pastoral produce and of the implements at the Akaroa Show on New Year's day, the Secretary to write them at once. It was resolved that Mr \V. Sims and Mr \V. Jacobson be requested to act as auditors to the club. The secretary called ntten tion to the fact thit the year had nearly expired, and that members still owed some £62 10s to the Club funds. He thought soma steps should be taken. Mr Libeau then moved—" That the secretary write to all members, asking them to pay in thoir
subscription at their earliest convenience." Seconded by Mr David and carried. Accounts having been passed for payment, the meeting was adjourned till 1 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 2nd, at the Oddfellows' Hall Akaroa.
