BATHING ACCOMMODATION.
How Vie have mimaged to go on so long without pro .deling some oea-bnth-ing accommodation for residents and visitor is one of those things which, as Duin>ea.y says," No fellah can understand." Se.tson nf.er sear.on goes on villi the hotels full of health-seekers f.'om Chris)church and elsewhere, and with our own wives aud children, looking as ii they would be all the better for a dip in tbe " briny," and yet nothing is so id ou the matte'-. It is for ladies and invalids wo more especially speak. Men cnu take a plunge from the wharf in the early morning, or go out in a boat later on nnd roll overb mrd, but those who most need invigoration from this source are altogether dobarr d the benefit, though the cool sea stretches invitingly before them.
One would have thought that some residents would have procured a bathing machine, which we are sure would pay good interest, but, of course, the erection of public baths would be by far the best .thing for the community.
We are sure that if it were known in Christchurch, Dunedin, the Plains, and elsewhere, ihat we had really good bathing accommodation, we should attract many extra visitors, and so add to the prosperity of the town. Baths are not very expensive a Bairs, and a small co npany could, we should think, erect them without risking much. At any rate it would be easy to make enquiries, and see if such a plan did not hold out reasonable prospects ot success. It has been said that the Borough Council should take the matter in hand, as has been done in the past in Lyttelton and other places. Such a course is a good one in many aspects, as, being under municipal authority, it would probably be looked after, and besides that, it might be a source of revenue to the Council. These are, of course, merely first thoughts on the matter, thrown out in the hope ot attracting public attention to such an important subject.
