The Running Match.—One regrets to hoar that the gentleman ba-ketl by Mr Mayne to win the 200 yards race has sprained a sinew in training. It is hoped, however, t'uii lie will be '' remarkably fit '" in a few days, and many who heave seen him go are still prepared to back him. 11.M. Court. —At the court on Friday, before the Resident Magistrate, the Akaroa and Wainui Road Board sued 11. 11. Fen ton for rates due, £4 5s Gd. Case adjourned to Sepiemher 12th. In anot'ier action brought by Dixon and another against C. A. Rich. £5 15a for firewood supplied, an adjournment was granted till to-day. The police withdrew the case against G. Brietmej'er, being unable to procure any further evidence. The Firics. —Nothing fresh has transpired. It is true that there have been a few alarms, and that people are very uneasy, but in spite of the police occupying the town there seems to be no clue to the mystery. A man was seen hanging about Mr Wilkins' house, and was chased, but got clear away; and tales come to us of mysterious strangers met on trucks. In our opinion, however, these suspicious persons are quite harmless, and would not be remarked on, except at such a time of general excitement. Football. —The B.P.F.C. played their closing match on Saturday.last, but, owing to the extreme heat, the game was abandoned after two spells. The members of the Club close the season next Saturday, when they purpose holding a paper chase. Messrs H.Drury and J. Sunckell have volunteered as hares, and we hope to wee a strong muster of hounds A stait will be made from Mr Granger's school at 2 p.m. .sharp. We are happy to state that the establishing of this club has been a success, and we hope next year to see the Peninsula boys competing with Christehutch Clubs.
Little Riveu Licensing Committee.—A meeting of this Committee took place on Saturday. Present—Messrs A. P. O'Ca'.laghan (Chairman), J. G-ebbie, W. Birdling, J. Wili-on, and \V. Joblin. The police reported favorably regarding Mr Judge's hotel at Tai Tapu and Mr Brickland's at Hill Top- Regarding Mr Olpheri's Hotel, the improvements ordered ward in a forward state, but not yet completed. The Committee ordered fie repairs to be completed within a month, or otherwise the license would be cancelled. The police to report on the matter to the Chair man. The Committee further resolved that each licensee in their district should be ordered to provide a rope ladder fire escape, for the use of persons sleeping upstairs in their hotels, in the event of a fire occuring. The Committee then adjourned to the 14th October, when they meet to hear report respecting Mr Olphert's improvements and the providing of the fire escapes as ordered.
Basks Peninsula Teaoaers' Association. —A meeting of the members of the Banks Peninsula Teachers' Association was held in the school at Akaroa on Saturday, Sept. 2nd. The minutes of Inst meeting , were read and confirmed. Corres pondence was read from the Secretary of the; E Ideational Institute of North Canterbury ; also from members of the association rugaiding the conditions and rules by which the members of the association can become members of the institute. After considerable discussion on the matter it was resolved that it be fully discussed and settled at the next meeting, all the members to get notire from the Secretary. It was resolved that Duvautrhelic's Bay be the place cf meeting in future. The next meeting will be held at Duvauchulle's Bay on the 2nd Saturday in October at 10 a.m., when, as the business is important, all the members are expected to be present. After votes of thank? to the President and Secretary had been passed, the meeting closed.
Barry's Bay Ckicket Club.—A meeting of this Club was held on the evening of the 2nd inst., Mr 11. Broderick in the chair. The minutes of the previous meeting wore read and confirmed, and Mr Spun , wiio had been requested to audit the books, reported them as correct, the accounts standing as follows :—Receipts, £4 3d 7<l, expenditure the same. The chairman was sorry to say tlice was no balance on hand this'ya.r, hut still it was satisfactory to find that .ill had paid up, and all demands met ; and it was to be hoped that tho forthcoming season would see an increase of members, plenty of sport, and a good balance on the right side of the sheet, at the closing. The following officers were then elected for the ensuing year : — President, MrS Robertson ; vice-president, Mr R. Latter , secretary and treasurer, Mr D. Le Compte ; ccptain. MrD. Of. Bates ; care-taker of the plant, Mr li. Broderick. Uearty votes of thanks for past services were accorded to Mr D. Le Compte and Mr D. G. Bites. The working committee appointed to make all arrangements with retrard to matches consisted of the following members :—Messrs U. Le Goinpte, T. Lo Compte. Spurr, 11. Broderick, G. D. Bates, J. Hunt, and A. Shadbolt. Messrs D. Le Compte and Bates were appointed to wait upon Mr K. Latter, with reference to routing of paddock for the season. It was decided that for the future boys over 15 should pay the same subscription as adult", namely ss; boys under 15, half the fee. After considerable discussion it was determined to open the season with a scratch match between the married and single, to take place at Bany's Bay on the lGth mat., commencing at 11 o'clock. A vote of thanks to the Chairman concluded business. '
Cricket.—We remind lovers of this game that the meeting, having for \\a object the formation of a cricket club in Akaroa, will be hold at WagsUff's Hotel this evening at 7 p in. Bkiurd Quarterly Licensing Meeting. —A meeting of thin Committee was held yesterday. Present—Messrs If. Piper (c-hnirnnn), Joseph Libeau, and S. Ci.rry. The Somerset Hotel, which has been burnt down since last meeting, being the only licensed house in the district, the members of the Committee thought it rather hard they should he called to attend a meeting when nothing was to be done. Outside News. —The cricket match between the Australians and the United Eleven was drawn. In their first innings the Englishmen made 126. The Australians made 182 in their first, but only 49 in their second innings.—The Dublin poiico have been insubordinate and man)' were dismissed, riots ensued, but the majority of the constables have now returned to their duty. —There has been a fire in High Street, Christchurch, which resulted in the destruction of a few shabby edifices between Messrs Huibert and King's. The learned pig " Bismarck " perishe 1 in the flames. Pigeon Bay Road Board. —The monthly meeting of this Board was held in its ollicc on Saturday, fcv-pl. 2, 1882. There were present Messrs Pettigrew. (chairman) Paton, Lyall. and Pilcaithly. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. Correspondence was read fromOkains Road Board, informing this Board that Mr Hamilton Of the s.s. Akaroa paid rates to them on 75 acres. The Clerk was directed to write to Mr Hamilton, claiming rates for this Board on the remainder of the land. From Messrs Miles ami Co., of Christchurch, requesting to know for how many acres the Board claimed rates from Mr Rhodes. The Clerk had replied but was instructed to write again and explain regarding therecent alteration of boundary between this district and that of Port Levy. From Akaroa aud Wainui Road Board, giving statement of expenditure on the formation of Haines'Summit road. The clerk was instructed to write for a refund of this Board's shave of the balance of the Bank deposit. From Messrs Joyut and Perceval, the Board's solicitors, advising that a new plan of the road through Holmes' Bay, for which a deed of conveyance was desired, should be made, and also re advertising preliminary to taking land for said road under the Public Works Act The Clerk was directed to write to Mr Wilkins, Surveyor, to have pbin as required, made. From Miss 11. Asbwin, referring the Board for payment of her ratos to Mr Ashton. who had bought her land, but the Clerk was directed to inform her that they must look to herself, as it was her name that appears on the ratepayers' roll. From the Surfaceman, giving monthly report. The Chairman informed the Board that three tenders had been given in for the breaking of met.l for the Akaroa road and he had accepted the lowest, that ot Mr E. Haines. The Chairman was authorized to keep on one of the present extra men for some time to overtake needed repairs on the roads. The bad state of Kay's Guily road w.is again referred to and Mr Pilcaithly sng gested th.it some of the members might have a look at ''• Afterwards he informed the Board tint ho himself w.is the only member of the Cemetery Bo ml who had kept the appointment'with Mr Hay, re road to cemetery. That gentleman had, however, pointed out to him the way he was willing a deviation of the present road might be made. The Clerk was instructed to write to Mr ILiy to ascertain what compensation he would he willing to accept for the land required for such deviation. The expediency of selling the grass on all the roads, of impounding cattle straying on them, and of allowing jjAtos across any, wv.re «ul>jects brought up but their final discussion was deferred to a future meeting. Mr Paton reported that J. O'Brein had been doing good work on the roads in his locality, and that ho had got Mr t'irmston to do some small repairs urgently required at the jetty. Attention having been drawn to the rickety state of tne jetty "trolly," it was agreed to authorize Mr Firmston to make a new one. The Board instructed the collector to summon Mr G. Cossar for non-payment of rates for 1881. The Chairman requested a short delay till he could speak to Mr Cossar on the subject, which was agreed to. After passing accounts to the amount of £37 5s 6:1, the Board adjourned till next month.
