" Milky White."—Our readers aro reminded of the entertainment at the Oddfellows' Hall to-night. No pains have been spared to put well on the ptage that strange mixture of light humor and deep sentiment known as the drama of "Milky White." It may be as well here, perhaps, to give a slight resume of the plot. Daniel White, a well-to do dairyman, is notorious in the neighborhood in which he lives for his vile temper, cruel selfishness, and love of the law courts. There is, however, one redeeming point in his character—the love of his only child, a daughter, on whom he lavishes a world of deep affection, at ntrange variar.ee with his contempt and hatred of the rest of humanity. The reason is this. In early life he had loved his chi'd's mother with a passionate affection that induced him to stoop to the vilest falsehoods to gain her hmd. She married, but never loved him, and his strong nature found ia the only child that was the reault of the union, an obj-ict on which to lavish the wealth of his love. As the child grew up the wife died, and an accident made White nearly deaf. His cowboy, Dick Duggs, a thorough lout, contracts an affection for Annie White, when she ia about seventeen, and, owing to a series of ridiculous mistakes, Daniel, or. as ho is called in the neighborhood, "Aliiky" White, becomes convinced (hat the alfeciion is returned by Annie—a bitter thought, that costs him many a pang. Tho real state of the. ciisei-, however, that a young cow doctor has gained her fiffeeiiops. The latter porsunago operates on White for- his-deafness, and restores his hearing. But his recovery is by no means an wimiixe.i blessing, lie overhears a conversation .between his daughter and Dick regarding a 'man to whom t.e veterinary surgeon has lent £2000 for life, o;i condition oil receiving £4000 at his death. Ihe girl fwrees with Dick in thinking that the sooner this character goes to another world the better ; but " Milky " misunderstands her, and fancies she refers to him. A terrible scene ensues. Stung to madness at the thought that the only creature he loves wishes him dead, he turns his darling into the .street, shuts the house, and locks himself in his beurooui, lo die. There is, however, a good v/ouian, to whom be has behaved in J the moat rascally ni<>unvr, who is deter - mined to save hi;n and reconcile him to his daughter. What is iris delight at finding her affections are u'x.-jd tnorj worthily. The surgeon turns oui to be a son of White's old partner, who has boon enjoined by his father to ;?oek liio union. Need wo say tlml the pitying widovr becomes Mrs Milky White, and that everything ends happily. The above is necea.-arily ;i mont imperfect sketch, but it gives the main outlines off the utory. Pigeon Shooting:—A pigeon shooting match; H>-iys The LytteltonTirnes, was held at the Wheatsheaf Hotel, Head of the Buy, Lyttelton, on Thursday, and a most enjoyable afternoon was spent. Some very good shots were made, rather above the average, 64 birds out of 98 being- killed. There were ten entries for the first sweep, three birds, at 25 yards rise. Messrs E. Pimm and Orton Bradley tied for the first place, each killing all their birds with the first barrel, Mr H. Hawkins, -jun., being third. The second sweep was also three birds at 25 yards rise, and in this there were ten entries. Mr H. Hawkins, jun., took srst honors in this sweep, his three birds falling to his first barrel, and Messrs Orton Bradley and Humphrey Clinker tied for second place but divided, taking second and third prizes respectively. Eight entries made up the third sweep, three birds at 30 yards rise, and for the first place Mr 11. Hawkins, sen., and Mr Orton Bradley tied. In shooting off this tie, three birds each at the same distance, the place of honor was won by Mr Hawkins. Messrs 11. Hawkins, jun., and H. Clinker tied for the third place, and in shooting off. at one bird each, lied again. This brought the afternoon's sportj to a close.
