PRODUCE MARKETS.

The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company (Limited) report on the Produce Markets for the week ending August 10th as follows:— Grass Seeds.—Christchurch—Tho demand for spring sowing has fairly set in, and some heavy transactions have transpired The high rates ruling for_ ryegrass has cnused considerable quantities to be brought to market, which has checked any material rise in value. We quote for this seed 4s 3d to 5s 6d, according to quality and dressing. Cocks'oot is in more limited supply, and in consequence of an unusually heavy demand for the light lands, an advance of 4d must be noted on the month, making current quotations s|d to s£d f.o.b , in Christchurch. Dunodin.—Ryegrass— The enquiry is as yet very limited. Farmers' lots would probably fetch 3s Gd to 4s 9d per bushel according to condition. But machine-dressed parcels would realise 5s to 5s Gd. Auckland—Stocks are heavy, consequent on the small demand of last season, the unfavorable weather having prevented farmers burning off at the usual time. We quote ryegrass seed dull at 5s Gd and cocksfoot at 7s 9d per 20 lbs. Timaru—This market remains very quiet, best, .nachinc-dressed is selling at 5s 3d to 5s Gd with a good supply. Oamaru—A fairly active business is passing, and present quotations arc fully responded to. Gisbonie—A good deal of uncertainty characterises this market, and it is felt that business is greatly prejudiced by the practice of passing off inferior seed in other districts as of Poverty Bay growth. It is desirable that this fact should be well■known amongst our Southern constituents, hence our reason for drawing attention to it. Buyers would do well to deal direct with holders here. There has been no business during tho month, and quotations are nominal at former figures. Napier— Cocksfoot and ryegrass—"This market remains unchanged. Miscellaneous.—Christchurch — Butter —Agood business has been carried through during the month at Is to ls 2d, but with a falling market in Australia, tho higher rate is not now obtainable, 12r>d being full value at the moment for prime parcels. Cheese—A fairly active mirket, with steady prices, has been characteristic of this produce since last we wrote. Good ordinary cheese commands 7-jd f.o.b. (cases included), but for primo quality £•! to Id advance on this rate is required. Potatoes —The past month has proved remarkably barren of interest, and trade has been confined to exceedingly narrow limits. Shipments t < Australia have been resumed, but the prospects there are, not encouraging. Wo quote present value 50s to 52s f.0.b., bags extra. Auckland—Butter is easier, and for good salted l)d to lOd is best price ■•obtainable, while inferior is selling at 4-Vd io G-l.
