OKAIN'S BAY LICENSING COMMITTEE.
The adjourned meeting of this Committee was held on Monday last. Present:— Messrs J. E. Thacker (chairman), J. B. Barker, F. Priest, W. Moore, and J. Moore. Mr Connon applied for a renewal of the license of the Little Akaloa Hotel. The Committee said they should like the inspector and applicant to retire whilst they consideied the police report. Mr Connon asked to leimiin, saying he should much like to hear the police report, so that he could give an explanation. The Chabman said that he would read it to him after they had considered it. Mr Connon then said that he would retire, in courtesy to the Committee, but did not think he was obliged to till he had heard the police report read. The Committee then sat for half an hour with closed doors, at the expiration of which the applicant was called in, and told that tbe Committee bad decided he was to make his paddock sheep-proof, keep the road in front of his hotel in repair, aud keep a light burning from sunset to sunrise. The applicant said that if he had been present when the report was read he might have influenced the Committee by explaining matters. He considered they had doalt him out Jedburgh justice, condemning him first and hearing him afterwards. He then asked leave lo make a statement, which was allowed by the Committee. He said he thought it very hard he should be obliged to keep a light burning all night,
as his house led to nowhere, and was often shut altogether at 9 p.m, The Chairman said tiie Committee considered a light, was necessaiy for the travelling public. The license would be granted at £10 a year, as forme ly. This concluded the business.
