SIiRKPKRS. — The Government invite tenders for 50.000 creosoted sleepers.

Borough Council.—Tuesday last Jwas the day for nominations for the Borough Couiicillorship left vacant by Cr Chamberlain's retirement. No one came forward, but it is to be hoped that burgesses will bestir themselves, and get s-sme good man to stand for the nomination ad\ertisei to close on June 2nd.

The Queen's Birthday.—Tbe town was as quiet on Her Majesty's Birthday as it" it had been Sunday. A iittle bunting was Hying, arid the shops were shut, and that was all. if we except a demonstration of that loyal burgess and subject. Mr Antonio Rodrigues, who commemorated the event l.y v display of fireworks in the evening.

Okain's Licensing District.-The poll for the decision of the ratepayers as to whether the different licenses should be increased during the next three years in the above district, was held on May 13th. It resulted, as will be seen by advertisement, in votes being carried against Ihe increase of publicans', wine, or bottle licenses ; there were a majority, however, in favor of increasing accommodation licenses.

Akaroa and Wainui Road Board.— There was considerable excitement on Tuesday at the Road Board Office, Head of the Bay, in consequence ot a contested election for a member lor the Akaroa and Wtiiniii Road Board. Messrs A. Wright and W. Chatlield were the candidates, and both being much respected, were well supported. As will be seen by adv rtiseinent, Mr Wright was elected by a majority of 23, polling 63 votes to Mr Chatlield's 40. A great .-..any people paid up their rates during the day for the purpose of exercising their privilege of voting.

Lecture.—Mr W. Barnett delivered a lecture at Ihe Congregational Church on Tuesday night, on " The Persecutions of the Jews." There was a good attendance, the Church being neatly full. Mr Br.rnett commenced with giving a description of tbe oppression of the Jews in the time of Abasuems. relating many historical facts in connection with tlmr period. Outside News.—ln the House of Commons on Tuesday, a motion, giving precedence to the Irish Repression Bill, was carried by a substantial majority ; und it further decided that the question of payment of arrears of rent, in Ireland should be dealt with afler tho Repression Bid. The House will sit to-morrow, for tha special purpose of dealing with the latter measure, which was read a second time to-day by a majority of 112. The Aiistraliati match with the Orleans Club was drawn in favor of the latter. The Orleans made 271 in their first innings. The Australians were all out for 95 in their first innings and followed on. In their second they made 240 for nine wickets. Murdoch being not out lor 106. " Ye Old Kn«;lialie Fay re " inChrisrchtirch is a great success.

Barry's Bay Cricket Club.—This Club wound up their proceedings lor the season on Wednesday last, by a scratch match— married against single—in a paddock kindly lent by Mr H. Latter. Mr D. Lecoin'.e captained the former and Mr T. Lecomte the latter. Owing to the limited time it was decided to have only a one innings match. MrT. Lecomte winnir tbe toss sent his men to tie wicket first the result being that all were out for 49, the principal scorers being Mr G. Bates 21 and Mr T, Lecomte 12. The best scorers on the married side were Mr T. Brough 20, Mr D. Lecomte 16, and Mr 11. Lecomte 10, the other six bringing up a total of 73, making their side winners by 24 runs. Night coming on the sport seekers not being yet sati-lied adjourned to the school room arid finished up with a very successful bill. About. 40 couple were present and dancing was kept up with great spirit till ihe small hours of the morning. The Club desire to express their thanks to the working committee and also to Mr R. Latler for tho use of his paddock.

Another Rumoured Abolition.—We have beeninformed that tbere ia a probability of a petition being presented to the Council at iIH next sitting for the merging of tbe Okain's Bay Road Board into tbe t omity.
