AKAROA RESIDENT MAGISTRATE'S COURT.
Saturday, May 20.
Before Justin Aylmer, Esq., R.M.
LARCENY.
Wm. Teare and Robt. Johnson, laborers [labourers], residing at Little River, were accused of the larceny of a bottle of whiskey, value 6s, from Olphert's Hotel, Little River. John Olphert, sworn, said : That on Wednesday, May 17th, the accused had both been hanging about the hotel, and by their conduct excited his suspicion that they had stolen some spirits. From some words he heard pass he followed them down the road and demanded a bottle of grog from them. They acknowledged they had taken it, but said they had thrown it into the river. However, after some further discussion they went back with him, and showed where they had planted tbe bottle.
Sergeant Willis reported that Johnson had been living with the Maoris [Maori] for some time.
The Bench sentenced accused to seven days hard labor [labour] for stealing the whiskey ; and further, informed Johnson that if he continued living with the Maoris [Maori] he would probably be brought before the Court for vagrancy, in which case a severe sentence would be inflicted.
Tbe Court then adjourned.
