Piokon Bay Road Board —This Board announce their intention of -striking a rate of 9,1 in the £ at their Juno meeting.
Bououaii Auditors.—Nominations are invited by the Borough Council to two qualified persons to serve as auditors. They must be sent in not later than Monday, the 22nd. The Queen's Birthday.—lt is proposed to hold races nnd rural sports at the Head of the Bay. on the Queen's Birthday. Three silver cups are promised, two for the horse races and the third given by Mr Brooks, of the Somerset Hotel, for a foot race. Lakebouhne—The township of LakeBourne, containing nearly GOO sections, and situate at Lake Forsyth, was offered by Messrs Matson and Co. on Saturday, and the following lots were sold :—96, 97, and 82, containing- quarter aures, realising iils each, and lots 92 and 95, realising £10 each.
Steamer from tiie South.—The s.s. Tlawea left l'ort Chalmers yesterday afternoon between 1 arid 2 p.m. She will probably reach here about 3 a.m. to-day, and Mr' Henning has been instructed to provide extra hands, so that she may get away before low tide. She brings about 30 tons of cargo. New Enterprise. — A correspondent writes :—I hear from good authority that our enterprising friend, Mr Thomas Brooks, of the Somerset Hotel, Head of the Bay, intends putting on a line of coaches in conjunction with the Little River Railway, together with a new steamboat on the Harbor, should the traffic allow of doing 80.
Nabeow Escape,—Some of Mr Smith s men bad a narrow escape on Thursday last, at Waikerakikari. It appears that in falling a tree it canted the wrong way, falling on a team of bullocks, several of whom had their ribs broken. Some men were caught in the upper branches and had to be cut out, but luckily they escaped without anything more serious than a terrible fright
Bokough Council.—Our Borough friends are reminded that the nomination for a burgess to fill the vacancy in the Council, caused by the retirement of Cr Meech, will take place to-morrow. Cr Chamberlain's seat having also become vacant through his absence without leave for four consecutive meetings, there will be another election, nominations Jor which are advertised to be sent in by the 23rd inst.
Banks Peninsula Teachers' Association. —A meeting of the above Association was held in Duvauchelle's Bay School, on Saturday, May 13. In the absence of Mr Nichols, the President, Mr Maelintock was voted to the Chair. A very able paper was read by Mr Bussell, of Wainui, in which he answered thoroughly tho two questions :—(1) Are Standards necessary and beneficial to the best interests of Education ? (2) In what respects may tho New Zealand Standards be improved ? After tbe remarks by the different gentlemen present on the paper read and a hearty vote of thanks to Mr Bussell. by Mr Spurr, and a similar vote of thanks to Mr Maelintock the meeting adjourned till Saturday, June 4. prox. Mr Gladstone's Repressive Bill.—ln the House of Commons on Friday Mr Gladstone introduced his Bill providing means for tho better repression of crime in Ireland. The salient features of the measure aro as follows:—The appointment of a Commission of Judges to try cases without juries in disturbed districts: domiciliaiy visits by the police ; expulsion from Ireland of foreigners who may be considered dangerous; and summary conviction of night prowlers. The Executive is also to be invested wiih the widest powers for dealing with illegal society meetings and inflammatory journal?. The operation of the measure is to extend over a period of three years. The Bill was read a first time the same afternoon. The Parnellite members consider the measure unnecessarily stringent, and inveigh against it in strong terms.
