The cheese and other Peninsula exhibits have been judged, but the awards will not be officially made until Monday. It is understood that the cheese marked No. 17 is, in the opinion of the judges, the finest in the Exhibition. The samples of cocksfoot and rye grass seeds are looked upon by experts as being very ordinary samples, and sufficient care has not been taken in dressing them up to exhibition form,
Arrived — The barque Tamerlane, from London, 98 days out, all well. Arthur Percy, the man who had assaulted Eliza Rudman prior to her death, was charged he fore Mr C. Whitford to-day, and sentenced to two nionihs' imprisonment. Di" Russell's evidence was that the woman's wrist had been broken by a blow, and the dying statement of thu woman was to the cii'ect that'■a blow had been struck by Percy on the writ-t with a, piece of wood. Her death was attributable, however, to natural causes.
The King of the Maories, Tawhai, with a number of other chiefs, formally received the Southern tribes to-day at Alexandra. Kewi and the King led the songs of welcome, but nothing of importance transpired. The ypeeehmaking is reserved until Friday.
The experiment of tea growing in Wellington has resulted most successfully, the plant growing splendidly. Sir George Grey and some of the other Auckland members have booked by the Rotomahana for Wellington.
At the Upper Hutt, near Wellington, an engine and some passengers carnages capsized. Luckily nobody was badly hurt.
A horse trainer named Keith died suddenly at PahiKTrfton, Otago, yesterday.
