Land SroRTS.—A meeting of those interested in holding athletic sports on the Queen's Birthday is called for Tuesday next at 7.30 p.m, at Bruce's Hotel.
The Shooting: Season,—Yesterday was the opening day of the pheasant season, but theio was not much excitement, though a few guns were, out, and met with fair success.
Steamer from the South.—The Wanaka is expected this morning, about nine o'clock, and has 30 tons cargo for this port.
Akaroa and Wainui Road Tsoard.— The extraordinary vacancy caused by the dentil of Mr Shadbolt is advertised. Nominations will be received up to May 10th, and the election takes place on the 23rd. Lake Ellesmere Drainage.—A deputation from the Akaroa County Council, (says the Press) comprising Messrs Baker and Joblin, waited on the Hon. Wm. Rolleston on Saturday with regard to the reclamation of Lake Ellesmere, and also as to the necessity of erecting protective works on the Akaroa railway to prevent tho washing away of portions of tho Hne. The deputation represented to the Minister that now information had been obtained at the instance of the County Council, which showed that one element of tbe problem in the past had been very much overlooked, viz., the inflow of salt water to the lake. Thej-'had devoted a large amount of time to collecting evidence on the subject, and plans had also been made which would be laid before the Government. The deputation also strongly represented that the railway lino way in great danger of being washed away unless some works were at once undertaken to prevent it. They would be prepared to give the Government full information on the subject and to transmit plans, etc.. The Minister said the representations of the deputation should receive full consideration at the hands of the Government.
Okain's Road Board.—A meeting of the Okain's Road Board was held on Saturday the 23th April. PresentMessrs Thacker (Chairman), T. Oldridge, and W. Thacker. The minutes and accounts of the previous meeting were read and duly confirmed. Letters were read as follows :—From Mr W. Barnett asking the Board to clear out the drain through his property. Resolved that the Board could take no steps in reference to said drain. From same, asking the Board to furnish him with correspondence between the Board and County Council re stoppage of certain funds due to this Board. Mr Oldridge having this correspondence in his hands was requested to hand it over to Mr Barnett. From Mr W. McKay, re rates. From Mr D. Wright, enclosing account for £1 ls for attending Assessment Court. The Clerk was instructed to inform Mr Wright that the Board does not consider itself liable. From the Pigeon Bay Road Board, asking if this Board is willing to take steps to have the boundaries of districts more clearly defined. Resolved that this matter be held over for a full meeting. From Mr W. Thacker, asking the sanction of the Board for erecting gates on the old road above Mr Oallaghan's. The Board had no objection to the erection of these gates provided they were not a nuisance to the public. A petition signed by 20 ratepayers, asking the Board to erect a public pound in Little Akaloa was brought before the Board. Resolved that this petition lie till next meeting, in view of the possibility of a counter petition being received. Mr Oldridge moved and Mr VV. Thacker seconded, that a rate of ninepence in tho £ be levied on all rateable property in the district—Carried. Mr Oldridge called attention to a bridge in Laverick's Bay requiring repairs. Resolved that instead of repairing the bridge a road be formed round it, Mr Oldridge being authorised to expend £4 on this work. The Clerk was instructed to ask Mr Osborne to remove obstructions from the Laverick road, caused by his fire. Mr Oldridgo reported that he had examined Knight's and Jansen's contract, and found it not done in a satisfactory manner. Resolved that the contractors be called upon to finish the work according to specifications. The following accounts were passed for payment :—J. Cairns £3 10s Gd, F. Hellier £3 3s, W. P. Hartstone£l lis 6d. H. E. Barnett 14s, Oliver Evans £1 3s, L. Christiansen 16s, Bendt Jargensen, on account bridge contiact, £5 ss, and the meeting adjourned. Akaroa Library.—The A-inuJ meeting of the members of this Library was held last night, His Worship the Mayor in the Chair. The Annual report w-**-) read. It ran as follows:—" In presenting their 7th annual report the committee beg to state that the total receipts for the past year including b-danee, have amounted to £74 3s 9d, while the expenses bavo amounted to £72 2s 4d, thus leaving a credit balance of £2 ls sd. The subscriptions amount to £45 4s 6d, being an increase of £4 7s 6d on the previous year. During the past year 6 new works have been added and several books have been rebound. The committee received no grant from the Government during the past year, and it was the balance in hand at the beginning of the former year that enabled them to order new books. The newspapers that are laid on the table for the use of the public cost £9 per annum. The committee desire to express their sense of the valuable services rendered by the Librarian. The Library contains 1252 works in 1786 volumes, distributed as follows:—Novels 753, histories 62, biography 60, travels and adventures 129, poetry and dramas 45, science 59, miscellaneous 144, total 1252, separate works, in 1786 volumes. During the past year 2195 works have been issued, distributed as follows :— Novels 1911, histories 24, biography 27, travels and adventures 107, poetry and dramas 8, science 10. miscellaneous 108 total 2195. It is to be remembered that the greater number of the scientific works have been in the reference room ; some of them bave now been placed in the reading room." The report and balance sheet were adopted on the motion of Mr Nicholls, seconded by Mr Billens. Votes of thanks were passed to the President, Vicepresident and Committee. A very hearty vote of thanks was also passed to the Hon. Secretary, the Rev. H. Stocker, whom all were unanimous in thanking for the very untiring interest he had taken and the amount of labor he had expended for the benefit of the Institution. The retiring President moved a special vote of thanks to the Librarian who had been indefatigable in the pursuit of his duties. Mr Stocker in seconding testified to the great trouble Mr (Sims had taken. An honorarium of two guineas was unanimously voted. Tho election of officers was then proceeded with. The President, Mr J. Aylmer, and Vice-president, Mr Westenra, wore reelected. Committee—Rev. 11. Stocker and Mess'-s Black, W. 11. Henning, Bruce, W. D. Tosswill, 0. M. Henning, and V. MnsefieM. A vote of thanks to the chair terminarad the meeting. At a committee meeting held subsequently the Rev. H. Stocker was unanimously re-elected Hon. Secretary.
Farmers' Club. — An advertisement requests members to pay up at once. The Borough Lamps.—These lamps were lighted last niAht for the first time, and had a hard struggle with the bright moon. The moon won.
Ratepayers' Meeting.—A meeting was held on Saturday, at the Akaroa and Wainui Road Board office, respecting the closing of roads in Pawson's Valley, Duvauchelle's Bay, County of Akaroa. Mr C. McDonald was in the chair, and read the advertisement calling the meeting, explaining its object. He called on those present to state any objection they might have against the closing of the said roads. There being no objections, it was proposed by Mr Checkley that the roads in question, situated in Pawson's Valley, be closed, and that the Clerk send tho decision of this meeting to the County Council, with plans, etc Seconded by Mr Brooks and carried. The meeting then adjourned. Bronchial Worms in Lambs.—Knowing bow much interest is taken in finding a remedy for this insidious disease, by the sheep farmers of the Peninsula, we gladly publish the following account of a remedy and tho way to apply it, which was supplied by the nheep inspector to one of our local breeders:—The stock were put into a bouse as air tight as possible, in lots of about 40. The ingredients, viz., tar, sulphur, and spirits of turpentine were put into a pot of burning coals, whereby a gas was evolved, which completely filled the house. The pot was suspended by a chain from the ceiling, and was brought as near to the heads of the lambs as convenient. An addition to the ingredients was made when necessary, to maintain a regular supply of gas. They were kept in this situation about 25 minutes each time. This treatment,,,. was repeated twice, and no further loss sustained. The quantities of the ingredients are, 25 lbs of sulphur to 1 quart of turpentine.
