LITTLE RIVER ROAD BOARD.
The ordinary monthly meeting of this Board was held or. the 3rd inst. Present —Messrs Parkinson, Wilson and Judge. On the motion of Mr Parkinson Mr Wilson was appointed Chairman pro tern, MINUTES AND REPORT. The minutes of the previous meeting being read and confirmed, the monthly report was next considered, after which it was resolved that the Clerk call for tenders to cart metal along the Lake Forsyth road, from the hotel at Little River ; to be considered in a fortnight. Also, that it be loft to the Cierk to agree with carters to stack shingle on same road, from Birdling's flat to Harmon's Bay. or thereabouts. TENDERS. There were three tenders to clear side channels on Gebbie's Pass road, that of W. Braring's being accepted at Is per chain, or £8 103 total. Two tenders were received to re-form road at Tai Tapu, that of T. McArtney was accepted at 12s psr chain. Three tenders were reseived to build bridge in Okute Valley (Board providing timber), and that of George Reynold's was accepted for £29 ; and the tender of Geo. Johnson to make approaches to bridges by police station, at Little River, was accepted at &l 3s per chain. SUNDRY BUSINESS. An application was mado by Fred Sorensen to purchase all the firewood on the hill Valley road—granted at Is 3d per cord. With regard to the approaches to the cemetery bridge, it was proposed by Mr Parkinson, seconded by Mr Judge, and passed, that the Cierk get the work done as soon as possible. With regard to building a bridge over the main creek in Western Valley road, it was resolved that the Clerk arrange as to carting boulders with that view, and that the further consideration of the work be postponed to next meeting of the Board ; in the meantime, that steps be taken to form_ approaches to the cemetery bridge, to divert the traffic in that direction. With regard to the road diversion through Captain Fischman's section in Western Valley, it was resolved that the Chief Surveyor be requested to furnish duplicate plans of the half chain road laid off through sec. 4264, the plans to show the original line of road as laid oft through sections 4264 and 4265, with the areas of each road, with the object of exchanging with owner. CORRESPONDENCE. Letters were received— From J. Keenan, asking that the road through Walker's creek be repaired. Resolved, that the matter stand over till a settlement be made with Mr White, with
regard to this road where it passes through his section. From K. Berryman, requesting that the Botrd grant some assistance, as his late contract on Dunford's Valley road cost him too much. Resolved, that the Board having learned that this contractor has taken this work through a misunderstanding, are willing to grant £6, provided the ILilswell Board are willing to pay half the amount, this being a boundary road. From G. W. Joblin, notice that he intends to fence in part of the road leading through Western Valley, marked red. From the Acting Minister for Public Works as follows :—
" Public Works Office, "Wellington, 9th March, 1882. "Sir, —In reply to your letter of the 10th February (acknowledged on the 13th of same month), I am now directed by the Acting Minister for Public Works to inform you that it is not usual to furnish the names of engineers or officers reporting to the Government, but if (as the Board states) they are prepared to prove that the railway does dam up the water on the north-eastern side, the district engineer will be instructed to place himself in communication with the Board, for the purpose of receiving such information as they may think right to supply. If they do so, I am to add that their explanation will receive careful consideration. Meanwhile Mr Austin has been directed to put himself in communication with you and arrange a meeting.—Yours, etc,, "J. M. Knowles, " Under Sec. for Public Works." Prom Under Secretary for Public Works, forwarding forms to be filled in, stating receipts and expenditure of the Board during past year. From F. W. Back, Traffic Manager New Zealand Railway, stating prices charged by railway authorities for carting shingle, ORDINARY BUSINESS. Proposed by Mr Parkinson, seconded by Mr Judge and carried, that the Government be applied to for one acre at the eastern side of railway line at Rabbit [siand (8 miles on Akaroa and Little River branch line) for the purpose of stacking shingle for the use of roads. Mr Wilson made application that about 60 chains of the road leading to Western Valley be benched to a width of 6 feet. It was resolved, that as Mr Wilson has paid for clearing bush on this road the Board grant the request, tenders to be called to do the work, and to be considered at the next meeting of the Board. Proposed by Mr Judge, seconded by Mr Parkinson, and carried, that tenders be also invited to clear the main drain at Tai Tapu and the side channel along the Tai Tapu back road. It was further agreed to clear drains leading from Swamp road by Price's Valley. Mr Parkinson was elected Treasurer to the Board for the ensuing year.
After passing some accounts for payment the Board rose.
