ATTEMPT
SHOOT THE QUEEN.
London, March 2.
News of an attempt on the Queen's life fit Windsor Station has caused intense excitement in London. Genornl satisfaction is expressed at Her Majesty's escape.
McLean, the would-be assassin, fired straight, at the carriage as the Queen was entering to drive to tho Castle, fie attempted to fire a second shot from his revolver, a six chambered one. The bystanders, however, rushed upon and prevented him from doing so, seized his weapon, and threw him to tho ground. The police with great difficulty prevented tiio crowd from lynching him, but after a struggle he waa rescued and taken into custody.
McLean is a miserable object. He is a Londoner, and was formerly a clerk, but has been out of work some time, and is supposed to be insane. No motive can be assigned for the outrage, but it has no political significance.
The Queen was quite calm and unmoved at the attack, and, after her arrival at tho Castle, received her guests at tho usual
dinner party.
March 3.
The Queen continues well, her health
having iti no way suffered in consequence of the attempt upon her life. Universal sympathy is manifested towards Her Majesty, telegrams having been received to-day from various Foreign Courts testifying to (he sympathy which is felt, and expressing gratification at her Majesty's providential escape from injury. The bullet which was fired from the assailant's revolver has been found near the scone of
the outrage.
The prisoner, Roderick McLean, was brought up to-day at the Police Court charged with the attempt on tho Queen's life. He was quite collected, showing no symptom of insanity, and pleaded that poverty drove him to commit the outrage. He declared that he had no intention of murdering her Majesty. He was ;e----manded to Friday nest.
It has transpired that McLean who attempted Ihelife of the Queen, was formerly confined in a lunatic asylum.
March 4. A debate took place in the House of Commons last, night on the subject of the Jewish atrocities in .Russia, under a motion introduced by Baron Deworms, Conservative member for Greenwich, vho demands that English Government, shoul i remonstrate with Russia against the pei.sedition of the Jewish race in that cor.iitry. Mr Gladstone opposed tho motion, statins,' thiit ;iny action on the paTt of England beyond mera friendly council to the Russian Government could havo no good "fleet, but would on the
contrary only tc;ul to do harm to the
cause of the oppressed Jews. The discussion lasted sonic time and the motion \v;is finally withdrawn. An attempt was made yesterday by
Mr Nmmons and Colonel Brine to cross the English Channel in a balloon. When they had got some dist .nee out to sea the baloon descended, and after flofitin r for some time, it and its occupants were picked up by a passing vessel and brought ro Dover.
A statement which was recently current, to the effect that Prince Bismarck had demanded of the Russian Government an explanation of the speecli of General Skobeloff t© Servian students in Paris, now authoritatively denied.
At the wool auction to-day 10600 bales were offered, and the tone of the market continued firm.
