OKAIN'S ROAD BOARD AND LITTLE AKALOA.

To the Editor.

Sir,— Consistency is a virtue; I suppose few persons aie inclined to dispute the truth of this adage. But is it applicable to private life only, or are public bodies supposed to be consistent ? This thought is suggested to me by a few curious coincidences which have lately come to my knowledge. First. In June last a large broadleaf tree was blown down, completely blocking the road leading from Little Akaloa to the Summit. In July last another followed suit. In language which has almost become classical I announce the fact—"they remain there to this day." Want of funds may possibly be assigned as the reason why they have never been removed; but can want of funds be the only reason ? Secondly. There is a ditch which has been a closed ditch for many years ; this ditch is in the direct means of approach from Little Akaloa Wharf to the summit boundary of the Okain's Road Board District. Now, however, it is found that the said Road Board, though they have not funds to remove the trees aforementioned, are yet in a position to open this closed ditch, especially if by so doing paltry private spite can be made to appear aspublicdisinterestednessand love of right and order. Is comment necessary on such consistency ?—Yours, etc., VINDEX.

On the motion of Mr Paton. seconded by Mr Pettigrew, Mr Pitcaithly was authorised to employ the labor required for the repair of Kay's Gully road.

The C.erk was direotcl to sjive noli™ to defaulters in arrewrs with tin* rates for 1880, and if the same wi-re m r paid within a specified time, to take legul proceeding-! for their recovery. The accounts of Mr Robinson. 15s B'i. and Mr P. Ward, £2 2s, in all £2 17s Bd.

were passed for payment. MrT. 0. Hay, the Board's Chairman, resigned that position, as he found its tenure incompatible with a press of private business. When he would not withdraw his resignation it was accepted, on the motion of Mr Pitcaithley, seconded by Mr Lyall. It was proposed by Mr Pitcaithly, seconded by Mr T. 0. Hay, and carried, that Mr Jas. Pettigrew be elected Chairman of the Board.

After some hesitation, Mr Pettigrew accepted, and the Clerk was directed to acquaint the bank with the change. The Board then adjourned.
