AKAROA BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The visual fortnightly meeting of this Council was held on Wednesday evening. Present —His Worship the Mayor and Crs Black, Gullen, Bruno, McGregor and Mecca. MINUTES, The minutes of the prior meeting were read raid confirmed, after a discussion. OUTWARD CORRESPONDENCE, The outward correapoudcnce was read and confirmed. INWARD CORRESPONDENCE. Correspondence was read from the Minster of Public Works, stating a, resolution of the Council re railway siding to Lfdce Forsyth would be considered. From various bodies, announcing certain awsets to the Council. From Clerk to Licensing (Jommitlee, acting for certain forms. It was agreed on the motion of Or Meech that the necessary forms should be procured. From Committee of Class A. Christ—
church Exhibition, asking Council's cooperation. From Mr E. P. Menzies, re borough loans. WHARF COMMITTEE REPORT. A meeting of tfie above committee was held at the Council Office on the 13th. Present —the Mayor and Cra Meeeh, Black, and Bruce. It was resolved that His Worship the Mayor be Chairman of the Wharves Committee, and that the following report be agreed to : —• '• Ist. The committee recommend that the proposed new scale of wharfage dues for the Akaroa wharves be advertised in the local paper, and stating that the Council intend to apply to have them fixed by Order in Council, as directed in letter from the Marine Department, dated Bth December last. "2nd. The committee suggest that a handrail be erected at the end of the Government wharf, to prevent a recurrence of accidents in the shape of people falling overboard at this place. They have also to suggest that about 20ft of rail be erected between the goods shed and the wharf lamp, the rail to be constructed from the old planking of the wharf. "3rd. Tlie committee advise that copies of the Humane Society's rules for the recovery of the apparently drowned be procured, and exhibited in conspicuous places en the wharf. " 4th. The committee, after giving careful consideration to the information at their command, are of opinion that there is no legally constituted ' Akaroa Harbor Board. , and your committee recommend that the management of the wharves be regulated by a committee composed of members of the Council, in the same manner as the other standing committees; and your committee further recommend, that in future all business connected with the wharves be transacted at the meetings of the Borough Council." The report was adopted. WORKS COMMITTEE REPORT. The Works Committee report running as follows was read :— Your Committee have to report that in compliance with the resolution of the Council they have inspected the locality in Muter street, referred to in Mr Lelievre's letter, and conclude that no effective improvement can be concluded without considerable outlay. 2nd Your Committee recommend that some further provision be made to admit storm water into the Jarge culvert at foot of Muter street, as the existing grading has proved insufficient. 3rd That someslight works are required to improve the outfall drainage at foot of Watson street, and that the stone channelling be filled in and well rammed in several faulty places. These repairs would require five or six days' labor. 4th. That Jollie street, from Balguerie street to Good wine Bridge, be properly graded and formed to provide a drainage outfall, as all outfall is at present intercepted by the new formation of Balguerie street. sth. That some slight repairs be effectad to the beach Btone wall, as several of the facing stones are being displaced. 6th. That the Council's stock of timber is exhausted, and that a fresh supply should be ordered without delay, as there is great difficulty in procuring a supply when required. Cr .McGregor said the roport did not give sufficient details, particularly about the road to Mr Lelievre's. Cr Black agreed. His Worship then explained that it would cost some £80 or £100 to grade Muter struct, as it would necessitate a retaining wall on each side of the gully, and alto the re-grading of Benoit street. RESIGNATION. Mr Sims sent in his resignation as Clerk to the Harbor Board. FINANCE. Keceipta since last meeting :—Fines, R.M. Court (Dec. month), £4 15s; dog tax, £1 lOrf ; rent reserve (Sadler), £4 ss. Total £10 10s. Credit balance at date, £98 3s sd. Accounts to be presented :— Mail (advertising), £2 5s ; H. C. Jacobson (printing), 2s 6d, Total £2 7s 6d. DRAINING OF LAKE ELLESMERE. Cr Black moved—Tlmt with a view to assisting the County Council in their endeavor, to bring before the Government the necessity of protecting the present line of railway to, Little iiiver His Worship the Mayor he asked to accompany the committee appointed bj' them, to inspect the locality where the proposed protective works are recommended, and that all necessary expenses bo defrayed by the Council. Cr Cullen seconded and the motion was carried unanimously. The Council then adjourned.
