LITTLE RIVER ROAD BOARD.
The ordinary monthly meeting of this Board was held at the office on February 6th. Present—Messrs Wilson, Parkinson, Judge, and Birdling. CHAIRMAN. The appointment of a Chairman being the first duty of the Board, it wae resolved lo postpone it to the next meeting, to await a full Board. In the meantime Mr «m|| Wilson was voted to the chair pro tern. ™ MINUTES. The minutes of last meeting were read and confirmed. w clerk's report. The Clerk's report was next considered. It was resolved—"That the stone abutment to Kaituna Bridge be attended to immediately after harvest is over, and that the state of the bridge over main drain on Dunford's Valley road be also attended to, as well as the side formation from the hotel at Tai Tapu to the junction of the * Ilalswell district. THE RATES. The Clerk was instructed to give public notice that all outstanding rates after the #* Ist of March be sued for without distinction. CORRESPONDENCE. Correspondence was received from the Union Bank re cheque book missent. It was agreed that the Clerk notify that said book has not reached the Board. From Messrs Duncan & Coltrel, enclosing account of Messrs M'lntyre & Lewis for preparing plans of road diversion in Geb- ** bie's Valley. From Mr Wright, Island Bay, requesting the Board to form about 20 chains of benching on the road near his place. The Board regretted being unable to comply w with this request at present, as there were more urgent demands on its funds. From Mr W. F. Binns, requesting that a bridge of some sort be erected on the main creek in Kaituna Valley, as the road is actually impassable. It was resolved— " That this matter be postponed to hear the Clerk's report on, and estimßte of, the work." Messrs Binns and Parkinson "* guarantee to do a reasonable share of the work. From the Akaroa County Council, enclosing copy of a resolution passed by m that body, relative to the proposition of the Government, of mnking a temporary terminus on the Little River and Akaroa Railway line at th fi jetty at Lake Foreyth. After much discussion tha following resolution was passed on the subject :— " That this Board in relation to the resolution passed by the Akaroa County Council, is decidedly of opinion that in consequence * of the gradual silting up of Lake Fcsyth, to make a railway terminus at the foot of the lake, ns contemplated by the Government, will be simply a waste of public _: money." From the Resident Magistrate, Akaroa, requesting the use of the Road Board Office for the purpose of holding an election of a Licensing Committee.—Granted, From the Minister of Public Works, intimating that as he had been instructed by his engineers, that no damage occurred to the roads through want of waterway, etc., on the railway, the Government c&v- ** not grant any assistance in the matter, and that nothing prevents the local bodies from letting out Lake Ellesmere as on former occasions. It was resolved—"That the be requested to furnish the names of the engineers above referred to, as the Board is prepared to prove that during last winter's floods the water on the eastern or north-eastern side of this line has for a time been 18in. higher than on the opposite side, particularly along Kaituna Valley ; and this Board, from long experience, are of opinion that a recurrence of the same will be the consequence * quence in every large flood. Further, that hitherto the Board has been subsidised by the Provincial Council to the amount of £100 a year for letting out Lake Ellesmere, and charged same to the pastoral rents accruing from land on the borders of the said lake." From Messrs Harper & Harper, legal advice re encroachment by Messrs Rey*nolds and Joblin on Western Valley road. Fiom Waimakariri Board of Conservators, requesting to be informed if the Board are proceeding with the collection of the Waimakariri rate. The Clerk was •instructed to have the amount collected remitted, and" inform that body that he finds it very difficult to collect that rate. From the Hospital and Charitable Aid Board, enclosing statement of icceiptsand expenditure of that institution. From Mr Inspector Broham, informing the Board that he had instructed the local constable to attend to the cattle trespassing on the public roads, and have the owners summoned. OKUTE BRIDGE. It was resolved—" That Mr Buchanan be requested to have the necessary timber ° n the ground at the site of the # bridge in Okuto Valley, as that road is in an impassable state, Mr Buchanan having been good ennugh to guarantee this part of the work on a former occasion. A. ACCOUNTS. After passing some accounts for payment, the Board rose.
