DUVAUCHELLE'S BAY.
A meeting of this committee was held, on January 23. Present—Messrs Pawson* (Chairman), Piper, Barwick, Wallace, Vogan, and Libeau. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed ANNUAL MEETING OF HOUSEHOLDERS. This meeting was very thinly attended, Mr Pawson was voted to the «hair and read a statement of accounts for the past year, audited by Mr E. S. Latter, and showing as follows :—Receipts, £172 15b 8d ; Expenditure, £157 13s 6d; credit balance, £15 2s 2d. The accounts as read was approved and adopted. Mr B. Shadbolt moved a hearty vote of thanks to the retiring committee, he was highly pleased to see the way they had worked, and trusted the new committee would follow their example, as he considered it the duty of committees to support the master in carrying out his duties Failing this the best of masters were sure to fail more or less. He would also like to impress upon the new committee the necessity of adopting the compulsory clauses of the Education Act. It was not for tho purpose of making it oppressive to others more than himself, that he had raised the question, as his own children had lost considerably through being kept from school. In most of tha cases the mothers were to blame. He knew there were others present that could fully endorse what he said, and seeing hew b idly the s hool had fallen niv ~, ■;,-, t!M , t) ac hoped the new com-
mittee would adopt the compulsory clauses of the Act, as it was the only way, in his opinion, to bring back the school to its former standard. The election of the committee for the ensuing year was then proceeded with, and the following gentlemen elected, viz., Messrs Piper, Pawson, Pettigrew, Wallace, Libeau, Vogan and Barwick. _ A vote of thanks to the Chairman terminated the meeting. At the subsequent meeting of the new committee Mr Barwick was elected chairman, and the following business transacted :—Mr Piper wished to know if there was any reply from Messrs Montgomery and Bowenre allowing themselves to be nominated members for the North Canterbury district. The late chairman replied that he had not yet written to them, but thought there was still sufficient time. The committee not taking his view of tho matter, the chairman was requested to telegraph at once, asking their consent and informing the committee of the result. Mr Pawson moved and Mr Wallace seconded, "That the compulsory clauses of the Education Act bo adopted and put into force ; the chairman to write informing the Board, and asking them to call in the aid of the police to assist the committee in carrying it out—-carried. On the motion of Mr Vogan it was resolved to call tenders for cleaning the school for the current year. Accounts amounting to £3 9s 4d were passed for payment. Moved by Mr Piper, seconded by Mr W. Allan, " That the Chairman be authorised to pay the master's salary, on receipt of voucher, and any ether urgent account that might be presented before the next meeting." (Carried.) Mr Pawson was appointed to sign cheques along with the Chairman. The meeting then adjourned- till the first Monday in March, the subsequent meetings to be held on the first Monday in each month.
