DiNNisii to Mr Wili/ahs.—A meeting of ihe committee appointed to arrange the complimentary dinner to Mr Williams met at the Head of the Bay on Saturday. It was arranged that the dinner should be held at lirure's Hotel on Friday next. The names of those from whom tickets can be procured will ho found in the advertisement. Mr Montgomery will be present and a large attendance is anticipated.
The Silkworms. —The following letter has been received by Mr A. Westenra : — •' Survey Office. Christchurch, Jan. 13th 1882. Sir, —I have been instructed by the Government to proceed to Akaroa for the purpose of assisting those who intend rearing silkworms this season. It is my intention to come down next week when I will l>ring with me some silkworms and some grain. I have the honor, Sir, to bo your obedient servant. G. Fedeeli. A. Westenra, Esq.. Akaroa."
Tiik English Mail.—This Mail arrived in Christi-hurch too late to be forwarded by the coach on Saturday, but thanks to the Post office officials in Christchnri.li, the residents here were not doomed to wait till Monday for their letters. Thai; poriion of the Mail which had arrived from Auckland was sent on by Mr F. Staples, who rode through with it, and arrived here about half-past six on Saturday evening-. The Mail was immediately sorted out and distributed. Yesterday the newspapers (which had heen kept back for fumigation') arrived by the. coach,
T. , !;-; [:■.■:-::':.■: vnox,\L Exhibition.—The Vf.s.y itas; nr-iwd llie lo lowing letter lioin MesM-s Joubert and Twopenny:— "Sir.—A cablegram received from London this afternoon intimates that owing to a large portion of the European exhibits not being able to leave by the last Orient steamer they cannot possibly reach bore till the end of March. Hence we are reluctantly obliged to postpone the opening of the Exhibition, and the first week in April being Passion week, we regret to have to state that the opening cannot take place until Easter Monday, April 10th. Hitherto we have prided ourselves on keeping our word as to elites, in spile of all difficulties, but we trust exhibitors and the public will recognise that under the cirenmstarces a postponement is inevitable, and the delny due to uo lack of energy or desire to spare expense on our part. The time for receiving entries will now be extended to March 10th."
