THE TREADWELL LIBEL
Chmstchurch, January 9. The case, of criminal libel—Tread well v. Telegraph newspaper—was adjourned to-day to the 16th Jan. Caygill, the publisher, was bound over to appear in one surety of ,6100. PUBLICANS IN TROUBLE. For allowing poultry to be raffled and keeping onen licensed houses, two publicans were each fined £2 10s to-day, with the additional feature that the convictions were endorsed on their licences. PARLIAMENTARY. A private correspondent telegraphs to-day that Opposition whip after communicating with various members, calculates that the strength of tho Opposition is fifty, and that there will be five neutrals. This leaves Government forty supporters. lie adds that efforts will be made to consolidate the Opposition forces before the meeting of Parliament.
