ROAD BOARD ELECTIONS.

Saturday last was the nomination day for the Akaroa and Wainui Road Board, and one would have thought that after all we have heard lately regarding local government, that some interest would be shown. However, such was not the case. The three retiring members, Messrs Shadbolt, Brooks, and Checkley, had all stated their willingness to be re-electe , and the two first took the necessary steps. . Mr G. Checkley, however, for the second time within a few months, made a mess of matters through his ignorance of the Act. He sen. a man down to nominate him, instead of filling up the required form, and the result is that the Road Board is put to the exp'-nse of another election. One good, however, may result from the occurrence of this truly extraordinary vacancy, and that is, that a little more interest may he shown in the matter. The post of member of a body with such capacity as the Road Board in question is a most important one. Hardly a day passes without some complaint being made against this Board, and the very best thing that those who want a better state of things can do is to try and get some one on the Board to represent them. We should like to see a general interest evinced in the matter, and hope for a stirring contest and free ventilation of opinion, instead of an apathetic walk over for a man who does not care enough for the position, to study even the alphabet of the Act.
