From Mr John Smith as follows : — " Heathcote Steam Wharf, Oct. 9,1881. " Sir, —I am in receipt of a letter sent by the clerk to the Board of the 3rd inst., informing me that unless I sent a cheque for £9 4s 3d legal proceedings would be taken. I think it very hard for me to pay • rates and deriving no benefit from it, not even a bridle track that you could take a pack horse through with meat or anything else, being entirely shut up, having to pass through private property to reach the saw mill, which might be stopped at any moment, and as White and I have been paying rates for a long time, we are entitled to some consideration, and to have some of the money collected for rates expended in our district. I trust you will give this matter your consideration as it will confer a great benefit to other settlers as well as myself, by opening up a bridle track to the place.—Yours, etc., J. Smith. It was resolved that the letter should be acknowledged, and that Mr Smith be informed that his application would be considered by the Board when, tbey received Mr Smith's rates. From Mr J. Lowe as follows :— " Wainui, Dec. 20, 1881, " Sir, —I beg to state that I have ceased to lease the paddock, No. 177, of 60 acres, Wainui Valley, and house, since last March 10,1881, and therefore would you please take my name off the roll as a ratepayer for 1882, for the above section. Yours, etc. "John Lowe." It was resol , to write referring Mr Lowe to the V ier. From Mr T yas follows :— " Akaroa, Dec. 20, 1881. " Genth .ren, —I beg to call your attention to ' .c urgent necessity of continuing th work now being done on the Sumre c road at the expense of Messrs Sandys and Co., from my gale to Mr Chappell's corner. The work required on this short distance, in order to make the road available fur wheel traffic, would be comparatively very light, and until something is done to it the work now being irgdone will be useless. "Tbe expenditure of my rate on the length in question wonld make it,useable : but as Mr Barwick has inspected tbe road he will be able to give the Board all necessary information. Yours, etc., "James Daly," It was agreed on the motion of Mr McDonald, seconded by Mr Brooks, that the work should be done.
