EXPORT OF FROZEN MEAT AND DAIRY PRODUCE.
A meeting of those favorable to establishing a company to export frozen meat, butter, and cheese was held in Christchurch on Wednesday, Mr J. Grigg in the chair. Tho draft prospectus, running as follows, was read :—
The company is projected with the object of providing the means of preparing and rendering .fit for export the surplus stock and. daiiy produce of this dis—
trict by the4-rJrcYigeratirig process. The present ,'intepion of .the'promoters is to' restrict operations to the p r eparatip||pf meat andrtairy produce for shipment)jJjsh" owner's j account and to arrangel'.'for the sale thereof in the London market": ' It is intended that the'company shall -'have power either to purchase or sliif/on owner's account, as may be fOunol desirable;" and also,' ! that they shall control the sale as well as the freezing and export of the, produce, until the scheme is fully in operation, it being evident that a concentration of interests is necessary in placing shipments on the markets. The preparation "and storage of cheese and butter for export will become one of the must important operations of the company, and as the market in England for these products is practically unlimited, at prices showing 50 per cent, advance on cheese and 100 per cent, on butter over those current in this colony, an extensive export may be confidently anticipated. The promoters recognising this all important feature in the project, purpose to provide cool storeage for butter, cheese, etc., where such may be collected from fanners as produced, and accumulated until a vessel is ready to receive it. After careful inquiry, it is estimated that the amount of capital to be called up (£10,000) will be sufficient to acquire suitable premises erect the necessary buildings, provide all requisite machinery, and meet the preliminaryexpenses. The English insurance companies offer to cover shipments against all risk, including deterioration on board ship from the cause, for 5 per cent premium. The promoters are assured that the London and St. Katherine Docks Company have already arranged to fit up vaults with proper appliances for cooi storage, specially to meet the requirements of the frozen meat and provision trade. The promoters have sufficient evidence before them to prove that the proposed business could be carried on at once with a reasonable certainty of substantial profits on any purchases of stock at current rates. They will therefore confidently rely on those who are directly or indirectly interested in developing the grazing industry of the country, to assist them in carrying out that which if properly managed, cannot fail to prove a very profitable undertaking.
The prospectus was adopted, and a long discussion followed, during which it was stated that the insurance agents in London had agreed to cover all risks at 5 percent.
The meeting was in favor of establishing a system of grades of butter, cheese, meat, etc., as they must not lend themselves to shipping anything but really good meat and dairy produce. Messrs j. Grigg, John Studholme, G. Hart, John Macfarlane, 7ohn Tinline, John Cooke. R. Westenra, P, Cunningham, J. T. Ford,F. C, Tabart, W. Chrystall, J. T. Matson. and li. Wilkin were appointed the provisional directorate.
