ADAMS. — ________________________________ _ TO THE-ELECTORS OF THE BOHOUGH OF AKAROA. GENTLEMEN,— I wish to cordially thank those Electors who recorded their votes in my favor, and, "though not landing me a winner, made the contest a very close one. Though not successful, my motto is Nil desperamhunn In encountering Mr Adams I know I have no mean element to contend with, and that is, the old residents of Akaroa, men who can look back to the time U when our main street—or rather where A our main street is now—was nothing hut tussock. I can readily understand the teeiing prompting that support. Wm On the other hand, I certainly must ~ confess I see ho reason for a man-being --. .returned because he is an old resident. I do think past services ought to rank i high in elections generally. I have preferred standing for election instead of going in unopposed, a thing I could have done previous to this, though some of my opponents seem to have forgotten this. I have not looked upon an unopposed election with so much favor as contested m ones, preferring rather to allow Electors r ' to have the opportunity to express their \ decision. When persons have put in v their nomination paper knowing there v >ias no opposition, I have styled this going in by the back door. Now I feel bound to say, on thinking the matter out,'that I n-ust put a different construction on an election under those circumstances, and rather say that an unopposed election is a higher compliment. Thanking you again, gentlemen, for your support, I am, etc., W-ME ECU.
