London, Nov 19.
The election for the vacancy in the representation of Stafford, caused by the death of Mr A. McDonald, the Liberal member, took place to-day, and resulted in the return of Mr T. Salt, Conservative, by a majority of 297. The Irish voters claim that the Conservative victory was due to their support.
Sir Charles Dilke, Under-Secretary for Foreign Affairs, has left London for Paris, to confer with Gambetta and his colleagues in regard to the Anglo-French Commercial Tieaty negotiations.
Washington, November 19.
The trial of Guiteau continues. The late President's vertebra was produced in Court to-day for the purpose of illustrating the testimony of medical witnesses. Guiteau's de'imanor in Court is quite callous. An attempt was made on his life to-day, as he was being conveyed back to prison. A mounted man fired at him with a revolver and wounded Guiteau in the hand. The perpetrator of the outrage, with the aid of his horse, succeeded in effecting his escape, and is still at large.
