AKAROA REGATTA COMMITTEE.

A meeting of this Committee was held on Friday evening, at the Borough Council Chambers. Present—Messrs Garwood (Chairman), W. 11. Henning, Black, Aylmer, Daly, Westenra, Adams, La Coste, Stocker, and H. C. Jacobson (Hon. Sec). MINUTES. The minutes of t.ie prior meeting were read and confirmed. CORRESPONDENCE. Tho following letters were read :— From Mr F. Back, traffic manager, Christchurch, as follows :— "Christchurch, Oct. 25th, 1881. 11 S>, —I have the honor to acknowledge receipt of your letter of 19th inst, concerning special train to Lake Forsyth on December 16. At present the line is not in a fit state for passenger traffic, and until the line is jpa.ssed lain unable to comply with your request. I am afraid it is hardly probable that tbe line will be completed by the date mentioned. Yours, etc., "F. Back, \ " Traffic Manager." Mn reference to tbe above the Hon. Sec. saidV he had seen Mr Lee regarding the transftt of passengers __ across tbe Little

-|MH iiiniimiiHjiiiin mini mi mm I \mmu\.iiitmmmttii^tmm«ian River Hill, and found that there would be considerable difficulty in getting more than - a comparatively small number to Barry's Bay. Mr Garwood said that ho bad written to tne manager of the Union Steam Ship-* ping Company, asking him to endeavour to get a steamer laid on front Timaru to Akaroa on tbe 15th to return on tbe evening of the lGth or morning of the 17th. In the letter he had pointed out that there had never been an excurtion from Timaru 'to. Akaroa, and that no doubt if facilities were offered many persons would avail themselves of the opportunity. The Committee generally expressed themselves as much pleased at the action Mr Garwood had taken and quite agreed with the views ho had expressed on tbe subject. From Mr L. M. Ollivier, Cap-Lain A.R.C., as follows -.— " Christchurch. Oct. 2Gth, 1881. " Dear Sir,—ln reply to yours of 20th inst., I would suggest that you insert in your programme for the Dec. 16th —Ist Pair-oar race ; 2nd, Double sculling race ; both races to be rowed in stump outriggers. My reason for so doing is. that all the Clubs here have the class of boats above referred to, and in the event of the water being at all rough on the day in question, the races could still be rowed, unless the water was a good deal rougher than usual. ' But if you give a prise for an outrigger (shells) race, the chances are that it will be too rough to row, aud besides tbere is so much risk attached to the carriage of •boats to and from the scene of action, which there would not be in tne case of stumpiiggera, as the boats are much: •smaller and stouter, and consequently can be more easily handled. Hoping to bear from you again.—-Yours, etc., " L. M. Ollivier, •• Captain C.R.C." From Mr C. Allard, Hon. Sec, Union E. C, as follows: —

M Christchurch, 26th Oct. 1881. " Sir,—With reference to your letter of the 20th inst., asking what races our club would be likely to compete for at the Akaroa Regatta, to be held on tbe 16th December- I am directed to state that the club think of competing for the senior double sculls, senior pair oars (if rowed in -stump outriggers), and junior fours, — Yours etc., " Charles Allard. ■• Hon. Sec. U.R.C." From Timaru Boating Club as follows:— "Timaru, 27th October, 1881. ■■Sir,—l am in receipt pf your favor of the 20th inst., and regret to inform you that our club will not be able to compute at your regatta, - Our boats and shed are about to be removed from the present site to town, and some weeks will elapse before it is completed. At some other time. I trust Timaru will be represented nt your regatta. Hoping your regatta will be a success, —Yours etc., " R. Macknv, "Capl. T.13.C." THE PROGUA.MME. The Hon. Secretary said that he thought they should draw up a draught programme as soon as possible, because the local rowing club would want to know what row- . ing races had been determined, in order tbat they might if possible get boats and practice. Ho thought a sub-committee might be formed to draw up a programme to submit to the next meeting of the committee. Mr LaCoste moved " Tbat a sub-com-mittee consisting of Messrs Black, Westenra, Stocker, and the mover be appointed to draw up a programme to be submitted at the next meeting of the general committee." Seconded by Mr Daly and carried. THE SUHSCOTION LIST. The Hon Secretary stated that he bad sent subscription li-ts as directed by the e< niinittee. Two residents who were visiting Christchurch, had promised to canvas, it they were provided with lists of peisons likely to subscribe. Lists were then made out, and the Secretary was instructed to forward tbem to those gentlemen who had kindly promised to help in thismanner. AITOIN'JMENT Ol)' OFI'IOEUS.
