Akaroa Boating Club.— A general meeting of those interested is called for Thursday evening next at Bruce'e Hotel. Abolition of Road Boards.—We hear that a requisition to abolish the Road Boards in the Peninsula is in course of circulation, and Ims been signed by a good many people. New County Map.—Mr Missen has received from the Government a new and excellont map of the present electoral district of Akaroa. It can be seen at his olfice by those interested.
The Banquet to Mr Williams.—A meeting of gentlemen interested was held on Saturday evening at the Council Chambers, at which it was resolved to defer fixing (lie date of Mr Williams dinner, till his return from the North Island, which he is at present visiting. Errata.—ln last Tuesday's issue by a clerical error it was announced that Mr Williams seconded a resolution at the last meeting, of tho A Akaroa and Wainui Itoad Board, Mr Williams was not present, , and it was Mr 15rooks who seconded the resolution in question. New Zealand Bee Manual.—We have received a very complete little vein me on bees, written by Mr J. Hopkins of the Thames. It is most creditably got up with njiueroiis illustrations, and we should advise all of our friends who make a study of bee culture, to invest in this very useful work. The price is 2s. Mrs Barry's Entertainment.—The promoters of this entertainment have as previously announced, arranged it for Wednesday, October 19th. It will consist of two dramatic pieces and a musical interlude. Great pains are being taken to make the programme not only varied, but excellent. Co-operation.—Mr Bateman addressed a meeting of farmers at the Somerset Hotel, Head of the Bay, on Thursday at mid day, and received many promises of support. In the evening he had a meeting at the Wainui schoolroom, Mr Walmesly presiding. The Chairman spoke of the benefits conferred on the working men of England by co-operation, of which he had had personal experience. Mr Bate" man then delivered an address, at the close of whicii a vote of thanks way accorded him.
Masonic —A meeting of masons wa hold at Bruce's Hotel on Saturday. Earthquake.—Mr G. W.Naldcrinforms us that he felt a rather sharp earthquake shock at 12.10 a.m. on Monday. The s.r. Penguin.—This steamer is expected early this morning from the south, and will sail fur Lyttelton shortly after arrival. Electoral.—Mr G. H. Saxtoti announces his intention of standing , for the Berani Riding at the coming County Council election. There are therefore two in the field for this riding, but no one is yet announced for the remaining eight.
Narrow Escape.—A man named Arthur Wallace, who lives at tho Head of the Bay, has had a very narrow escape. He was taking the lampas out of an entire horse belonging to Mr A. C. Knight, when it reared and struck him on the jaw with ts fore feet. Fortunately the horse was not shod, and one is glad to record that Wallace is fast recovering from the injury.
Dog Poisoning.—A dog of Mr William Wood was poisoned yesterday morning in the Borough. It is well for those who laid the poison to know that they are subjecting themselves to a very heavy penalty. Whilst quite sympathising with persons who consider the number of useless dogs in Akaroa as excessive, we have none with those who carelessly lay distructive poison, which is just as likely to be taken by tin extremely valuable animal as by a wretched cur.
Akaroa Model Yacht Club.—A meeting of the above Club was held on Thursday last. There was a good attendance of members. Mr Bruce took the chair. The minutes of last meeting were read and confirmed. Mr W. Jolly was elected a member of the Club. It was decided that the annual race for the Challenge Cup take place on the 9th November next. The cup at present is held by Mr Burke, who, if he should succeed in winning this event will become the owner. There is a good deal of interest shown in the coming race and a good many entries may be expected. Full particulars as to the time of entries closing, etc., will appear in an advertisement in a future issue.
