ESCAPE OF A LUNATIC.
CHnisxcHURCH, October 6. A lunatic escaped from the Asylum this morning at 11 a.m.. and is believed to have gone in the direction of Akaroa. THIS CHRISTCHURCH ELECTION. Mr John Anderson has announced his intention to stand for Christchurch South, in the General Assembly. DEATH OF MR SIIERWIN. Walter Sherwin of Carandini recollection is dead. ASHBURTON RACES. At to-day's Ashburton races, the Hunt Club Cup of 15 soys was won by Mr E. Saunder's " Why Not;" Dr Ross's «• Lone Hand " was 2nd, and Mr Cotton's " Mungo Park " 3rd The Maiden Steeplechase of 10 soys. was won by Mr S. Sampler's '* Cloud," Mr Carter's "Glengarry* was 2nd, and Mr Cotton's " Butterfly " third. The Farmers' Steeplechase was won by "Maid "of the mill.
