Consols remain at 100|. New Zealand securities continue, at following quotations : —5 per cent 10*40 loan 105. 5 per cent 1889 loan 4£ per cent 1879, 1904 loan 10l£ ex div. Adelaide and New Zealand breadstuffs continue firm at 52s for Adelaide wheat and 38s for Adelaide flour ex warehouse, and 51s 6d for New Zealand wheat ex ship, Australian tallow unchanged at 34s 6d for best beef and 36s 6d for best mutton. The homeward Australian mails which left Melbourne on July 5 were delivered, via Brindisi, to-day. Washington, August 17. This morning's bulletin reports that President Garfield is still in a very critical state, but his case is not considered hopeless. Calcutta, August 16. Telegrams are to hand to-day from Afghanistan, reporting that the troops recently despatched by the Ameer to Kherat Ghoulzi, on the road between Cabul and Candahar have now evacuated that place. The object of their movement has not transpired.
