Invercaroilij, July 18. At the Police Court to-day, Hugh Barlan, alias Baldwin, was committed on five charges of obtaining goods by issuing valueless cheques, and received cumulative sentences amounting to 18 months.

(From The Lifttcllon Times) Thames, July 17. The severest and most destructive flood ever experienced here occurred last night. Rain has been incessant for 48 hours, and all the creeks are so flooded as to carry away the bridges and bring down thousands of tons of debris. Two men were washed away, and one body only was recovered. About 50,000,000. feet of baulk timber was washed to the booms at the Shortland Mills, and millions washed to sea. The damage to the town was very great, and is estimated at £10,000. The Borou-jh Corporation put on 50 men to repair damages, and it is estimated %\\at they will require £5000 to make good the injury to the culverts, streets, &c.
