OKAIN'S DISTRICT ROAD BOARD.
A meeting of this Board was held or Saturday, April 30, in the Library, Okain'i Hay. Present — Messrs Moore (in tin clmii). Barker, Bennett, Thacker, and Ohlridge. The minutes of the previous meeting ■ were read and confirmed. '• COKKESrONDENCK. Letters were road— ; Fiom Messrs Harper & Co., on behalf o ' Mr J. E. Thacker, claiming £100 a: damages alleged lo have been sustninei 1 by him through breach of agreement ot ■ the part of the Board with reference to tin . leasing of the jetty in Okain's Bay. It was resolved to furnish Mes-rs llnr per with the names of the Board's solid 1 tors, Messrs Wynn Williams, & Deacon " mihl as the Chairman and Mr Moore were going to town, they were authoiized to in struct the solicitors. It was distinctly un derstood that the trip was to be at tin ; members' own expense. : Fiom Mr William Jonson. complaining ; strongly of a gate of Mr i-liultleworth's < The letter concluded in the following peremptory terms : — ' I demand yon anr the Gentlemen of the Bond to remove the ' (fate if not i will summond the Hoard tt ihc Magistrate Court. I am a nitcpayci . as well as him." It was resolved to advise Mr Johnson tt ! keep bis cattle off the road, when the gate would not annoy him. IUUPOK AT LITTL'i AKALOA. ' Messrs B-irker and Bennett reporter ■ having accepted a tender for ccrtair . necessary repairs to a bridge near Wag horn's, at Li:tie Akaloa. The tenderoi 1 was Mr John Priest, and the amouni £7 10s. The action was approved. CLOSING OF IiOAD, LIO JJON's B\Y. A conversation took pb-;ce as to the step; nrccs-'sary to be taken in this matter. Ihc Clerk reported what had been done at the public meeting, held lately to consider the stoppage. Mr Barker thought there was no doubt that several informalities had taken place in the proceedings. This view was concurred in, and it was considered tc be no use to go before the Council in the matter. Mr Oldridgo moved that Mr Barnett be informed that the proceedings had been irregular, and that if he wished anything further done he would be required to deposit the expenses. The resolution was carried. OKAIN'S MAIN JtOAl). Mr Thacker thought something should be dote towards clearing away the slips on this road. By doing a little now considerable expense weuld be saved in the future. The Chairman agreed in the necessity, hut did not see where the money was to come from. I'TXANOK. Accounts amounting to £15 Gs were presented for payment. A long conversation ensued on the financial position of the Board. The Clerk read a statement of his claimsagainst the Board. It appeared from this statement that certain disbursements had been made out of cash as collected, and therefore the whole of (he rates had not passed through the bank. Mr Barker thought the best ,vay to satisfy the auditor would be to pass a payment oi what was due to the Clerk, and let him pay if in to the Board's credit. It was agreed that the Chairman and Mr Barker should interview Mr Ollivier on the matter when they were in town. STOPPAGE Of 110 AD. Mr J. E. Tbacker waited on the Board, asking them to take steps for dosing a portion of the od road out of Okain's, running through sections "15,-137, 19,371, 19,303, 111,5-10, 19,517, and 20,950, to the summit. It was resolved that the Board tako the necessary steps to close the road. RATE DEFAULTERS. Mr Oldridgo moved that the Clerk be instructed to take proceedings at once against the twelve largest ratepayers still in default. —Carried. The Board then adjourned.
